  1. Partnerships for Learning and improvement Steve Munby Birmingham Education PartnershipSummer Lecture

  2. CfBT’s Mission • To provide outstanding, sustainable education solutions that transform the learning in schools for millions of children and young people worldwide

  3. 1. Leaders who ensure powerful learning for children and young people – within and between schools

  4. Key behaviours of inspiring teachers CfBT | Learning Centred Leadership | Steve Munby Demonstrated genuine warmth and empathy Created a sense of security about learning – encouraging experimentation Used highly interactive whole class instruction Encouraged students to communicate frequently with one another Developed meta-cognitive skills

  5. My teacher believes that learning is important My teacher seems to like teaching My teacher expects me to do well My teacher is interested in what the students think My teacher believes that all students can do well

  6. 2. Leaders who enable all staff to develop their professional expertise – using the best the partnership has to offer

  7. Leadership practices that have the most impact on student outcomes: Source: Viviane Robinson 2011 – Student-Centred Leadership

  8. The more leaders focus their relationships, their work and their (own) learning on the core business of teaching and learning, the greater their influence on student outcomes Viviane Robinson, 2011

  9. The “10,000-hour rule” — that this level of practice holds the secret to great success in any field — has become sacrosanct gospel... The problem: it’s only half true. If you are a duffer at golf, say, and make the same mistakes every time you try a certain swing or putt, 10,000 hours of practicing that error will not improve your game. You’ll still be a duffer, albeit an older one. DanielGoleman

  10. Linked with whole-school improvement, it is continuous not occasional, and everyone is an active participant, fusing learning and development with daily professional practice. Professor David Hargreaves

  11. 3. Leaders who are enthusiastic learners themselves; invite challenge and commit to continuous improvement

  12. Like inquisitive scientists, the best corporate leaders we’ve researched remain students of their work, relentlessly asking questions – why, why, why? – and have an incurable compulsion to vacuum the brains of people they meet. Jim Collins

  13. Leading and learning in challenging times Detached involvement is the essence of leadership Feeling good is a skill As leaders we need to walk into the wind Accept that crises are going to be the norm CfBT | Learning Centred Leadership | Steve Munby

  14. You may not control all the events thathappen to you but you can decide not to be reduced by them. Maya Angelou

  15. 4. Leaders who help to lead the system and support future learning - toward a model for self, school , cluster and city wide learning and improvement

  16. Building a city wide model for learning and improvementThe BEP / CfBT Schools Partnership Programme CfBT | Learning Centred Leadership | Steve Munby A belief in the power and potential of a self improving, school-led system – using the best Birmingham has in the service of city wide improvement An inclusive and coherent approach –resisting fragmentation Challenging complacency – robust review, challenge and support Avoiding “splendid isolationism” or “warm collegiality” and building on current cluster based models

  17. Building a city wide model for learning and improvement, continued CfBT | Learning Centred Leadership | Steve Munby A focus on what we know works – robust, moderated and managed approaches to self review, peer review and school to school support Built on but not bound by the OFSTED framework – stretching to ‘inspirational’ Focused on the technical aspects of school improvement and on culture change Cluster to cluster within the city – and linked to a national network Co-constructed – by Birmingham for Birmingham; 7 test partnerships

  18. Cycle for the improvement of schools

  19. The Schools Partnership Programme is built on the values of transparency, honesty, respect, interdependence and a commitment to learn Working together we can build a city wide culture of learning-centred leadership for all • We seek to work with professionalism, honesty and rigour in an atmosphere of trust to ensure robust self and peer evaluation CfBT Birmingham Education Partnership
