  1. Evaluating Blatter GRAVE

  2. A weakness was Generalisability • The addicts used in the study were unrepresentative of the majority of drug users. Most were heavily dependent, they also used a variety of different drugs and had psychiatric problems. • It is therefore difficult to generalise from this sample to all drug users

  3. A strength was Reliability • Cross checking the self report data with urine analysis increased the reliability of the self report data. • Reliability was improved over the course of the study….. What is the evidence of this?

  4. A strength was Application • The study is useful. • It shows that providing an appropriate programme of treatment which includes medical, social and psychiatric support can help even hardened drug users to reduce their use. • It also contributed to the reduction of other associated undesirable/illegal activities

  5. A weakness was Validity • Some of the ppts only joined the programme to obtain Heroin with no intention of giving up cocaine. • Self report data is subject to people lying. However, only 2% of ppts who tested positive for cocaine had self-reported as negative. • The longitudinal nature of the study meant that those ppts who were at most risk were most likely to drop out – this could artificially increase the success rate. The drop out rate was 11%

  6. Ethics • Ethical standards were high. • This was necessary as the ppts were especially vulnerable • PPts gave informed consent • The study was approved by the national ethics committee
