BACKGROUND ITU, following the establishment of Disaster Management Center in 2001, has initiated the Disaster and Emergency Management Non-Thesis Graduate Program thought in English, to educate qualified Emergency Managers ready for every stage of Integrated Emergency Management in Emergency and Disaster cases, with great support from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in 2002 and contributions of Oklahoma State and Texas A&M Universities. The name of this program has been updated as “Disaster Management Non-Thesis Graduate Program” after the first graduates in order to fit to the present needs.

  4. MISSION Specific mission of the Disaster Management Non-Thesis Graduate Program, which is conducted in a multi-disciplinary approach, is • to create an educated human resource potential in the field of disaster management for our country, which is frequently subjected to man-made or natural disasters, • to lead to the establishment of “Emergency Manager" profession and to contribute to the development of the Turkish terminology in disaster management.

MISSION Within the scope of this mission, it is aimed to raise graduates; • who has knowledge on natural and technological disasters and resulting physical conditions; • who is qualified to take effective role in preparation, reduction of damage and intervention; previous to, during and after the disaster in a way to minimize the environmental impacts as well as life and property losses; • who can be effective not only limited to scientific, technical and technological basis but also social, economical and communicative aspects; • who can work individually or collectively in the field of emergency and disaster management, and • who has the self-confidence to work in every part of the globe.

  6. ABOUT US Disaster Management education and research in our country has gained great acceleration following the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake. After the earthquake, 31 academicians of different specialties from our university has received theoretical and applicatory training in the field of disaster and emergency management for a year within the scope of the collaboration with FEMA in order to fill the occupational vacancies in emergency and disaster management related managerial and planning as well as specialists.

ABOUT US As a result of this cumulative knowledge, it is aimed to educate qualified persons with the initiation of Disaster Management Program at graduate level in order to disseminate the disaster management basis. The structure of the program and the curriculum has been updated according to the present needs. In accordance with the application at ITU, 30 % of the courses in this program are taught in English.
