IDN in Malaysia • Malaysia is a multiracial country • Malay (Jawi) • Chinese (Simplify Chinese) • Indian (Tamil) • Others • National language is Bahasa Malaysia (Malay) • Official education system uses Latin script (a – z and 0 - 9) • People in Malaysia basically understand and able to write all Latin script

  5. IDN in Malaysia • So, most of the Malaysian has no issues to use Latin script domain name • www.tuition.my => English • www.tuisyen.my => Bahasa Malaysia(Malay) • IDN is more on social / community/ cultural preservation instead of the commercial need

  6. Type of IDN supported by .my .my will support 3 scripts of IDN, which are Jawi, Chinese and Tamil. As a start, we will launch 2nd level IDNs in Jawi script (for example: اورݢانيسايس..my, چواب..my).

Top Level IDN for Malaysia Issues in selection Top Level IDN in Malaysia مليسيا. = .malaysia ماي. = .my All communities in IDN Jawi agree to choose Malaysia in full name as IDN in Fast Track due to the requirements of IDN which is : “The IDN ccTLD string(s) must be a meaningful representation of the name of the corresponding country.” مليسيا.

IDN 2LD & TLD Implementation Plan IDN.ASCII In Tamil In Chinese In Jawi 2LD IDN in Malaysia will be in 3 language (Jawi, Chinese, Tamil) scripts IDN.IDN (IDN Fast-track pilot project) 马来西亚. 马来西亚 மலேசியா. மலேசியா چوبا. مليسيا TLD IDN in Malaysia will be in Jawi scripts first then followed by Chinese and Tamil script.

  15. Sunrise 1 • 2nd Level IDN Jawi only • Application open for Government agencies, School, Others related to government. • 9am 24 Jan 2011 – 5pm 30 April 2011 • FOC for 1st year and 2nd year • Only 12 Domain Name had been registered (August 2011)

  16. Why low registration ? • Most of the Malaysia Computer Keyboards are in English • Jawi is not widely use in Malaysia, even in the Malay community • Lack of market awareness • Public didn’t think it is a necessary to have Jawi domain name

  20. IDN Conditions The language must be an official language in the corresponding country or territory, and have legal status in the country or territory, or serve as a language of administration. Jawi is official language and has legal status Tamil and Chinese is not official language, and also no legal status

  21. IDN Fast Track Submission • Jawi has no issue • Chinese and Tamil need more preparation • Submit Jawi first, and meanwhile preparing Chinese and Tamil supporting documentation • Jawi application was submitted on July 2011
