“The Celtic lands of the Scottish Highlands were in fact an integral part of the Gaelic Irish world.”

Dr Kenneth W. Nichollsis one of the most widely respected Irish historians of the twentieth century. He came to national and international prominence as the author of the seminal Gaelic and Gaelicised Ireland in the Middle Ages, first published in 1972. He is particularly regarded among his peers for his unsurpassed knowledge of late medieval and early modern historical sources in Irish, Latin, French and English languages.

“This early Norse-Gael Lordship, founded by Somerled and which was to develop through his descendants into Clan Donald, was very definitely not part of Scotland.”

Dr David Caldwell, Archaeologist, (ex) Keeper of Scotland & Europe in the National Museums of Scotland, Curatorial Advisor to the Museum of Islay.

“THE WERE CONNECTED TO NORWAY BY POLITICS, TO IRELAND BY CULTURE AND BY BLOOD TO BOTH.”

Dennis Rixon. Hebridean Galley.
