  1. Cell Size

  2. Cell Size • Cells size is limited by diffusion • Nutrients must reach all areas of cell. • Waste from all of cell must be able to leave without poisoning other parts. • Small cells are more efficient then large.

  3. Surface area to volume ratio is key • Too Large a ratio – unable to diffuse quick enough.

  4. Relative Concentrations

  5. Hypertonic • Cells in solutions that cause water to leave the cell. • Cell shrinks in size.

  6. Isotonic • Solution that is at equilibrium with the cell. • Same concentration in and out of cell. • Cell maintains its shape/size.

  7. Hypotonic • Cells in a solution that cause water to enter the cell. • Cells swell • Cells may burst – LYSE.

  8. Endocytosis • Movement of materials into a cell by a vesicle. • “Cell Eating” • Membrane bound vesicles.

  9. Exocytosis • Movement of a substance to the outside of a cell. • Membrane bound vesicles. • Vesicles bind to membrane. • Used for export of proteins, etc…
