Mission Statement of School • Our school is a community in which we are all valued. • We aim for all our children and staff to achieve their maximum potential. • In our school we are all equal and included. • We learn to respect and empathise with members of society. • We value friendship, compassion and honesty. • We believe it is important for children to experience all aspects of the wider curriculum. • We prepare for the future and learn to be problem solvers. • To be confident and creative, to be healthy and fit and care for our environment.

Objectives of the projectWhy did the project start? • To develop effective home/school partnerships • To improve attendance and punctuality • To work with school staff in developing positive relationships with parents • To target families who would benefit from support • To work with staff and focus group of pupils and parents to identify areas for support • To organise and publicise workshops in school

  4. FundingHow did the project start? • Lancashire Children’s Fund provided funding for the project from April 2002 – March 2004 • Two staff appointed to the project initially. Project Co-ordinator and Outreach Officer. Due to cessation of funding in April 2004, only Project Co-ordinator was sustainable • Project is now mainstreamed and is part of the School’s Development Plan

Benefits for pupils and schoolWhat have been the benefits? • Greater parental involvement in children’s learning. • Support through homework clubs and homework tracking programme • Increased pupil motivation & self-esteem • Support with attendance and punctuality through punctuality tracking programme • Increased levels of pupil attendance & punctuality • Higher levels of pupil achievement • Enhanced partnership working with the parents and the community

Benefits to Staff Parental development coordinator reduces workload and enhances the development of positive relationships by:- • Supporting clear communication between staff and parents and vice versa • Liaising with parents on behalf of teachers • Working with teachers to identify problems • Encouraging parents to attend parent teacher meetings and SEN reviews and assist with translation • Promoting school activities to parents • Liaising weekly with the office administrator to follow up attendance/punctuality issues with parents

  7. Benefits for families • Improvements in child behaviour and social skills • Greater parental involvement in children’s learning • More opportunities for local adult education and family learning • Raised levels of esteem through working with parents

  8. Benefits for communities • Greater use of School site to deliver services that meet the needs of the local community (link to Extended Schools) • Closer relationships with the school

Our achievements so far • English/Urdu classes enabling parents to develop their language skills • ICT Parents workshop – basic course designed for parents to develop their computer skills • Parental workshops designed for parents to assist their children with homework at home and literacy skills • Homework Tracking programme working with targeted children • Attendance & punctuality monitoring working in partnership with EWS • WOW! 4U! Women Of Walter Street. A series of seminars and workshops for women in partnership with numerous voluntary & statutory organisations. Our current focus promotes healthy living. Sessions include monitoring weight, healthy eating, diet tips and aerobics. • Dads and Lads project This was to encourage parents to support their children in literacy through playing rugby at home and in school

  11. Punctuality and attendanceOur success story Continuous monitoring of attendance & punctuality has seen a huge improvement in the effort made by both children and parents. Activities to improve attendance and punctuality carried out so far include:- • Punctuality Progress Register – to monitor punctuality of target children. Children to come to the office daily before 9am for their punctuality mark and receive a sticker for being on time. Children who achieve 100% punctuality for the week are rewarded with certificates. • Walter Bumble is our school mascot. He is awarded to the class with best punctuality and attendance for the week, earning extra 10 minutes playtime as a reward. • Time Beaters week is a special week held once a term to improve attendance and punctuality. Children receive stickers for being on time daily. Classes with 100% punctuality for the week are rewarded with Celebration Tea and a highly prized golden certificate. • Ticket to Treasure is an extra incentive scheme, targeting Year 6 pupils. Children with 100% punctuality for the week are given a raffle ticket to take part in the weekly raffle draw. The child with the winning ticket can choose a ‘cool’ prize from the treasure box.

  12. Extended visits School has clear guidelines for parents about extended leave and clear procedures for applying. Holiday packs are provided for the children to take with them and bring back. This includes:- • Work booklet • My Treasure packet • Disposable camera [awaiting funding] • Travel activities e.g. Walter Street word search, I Spy on the plane

FutureWhat happens next? • Evaluate evidence of this project and look to maintain existing effective project work and develop further • Continue to work closely in partnership with other agencies eg:- Healthy Schools programme, local Adult Education providers- Nelson and Colne College, Cyber café • Continue to share experiences with other Primary Schools
