Facts about Dolphins There are 40 different species of dolphins. 6 of those species are called whales but are really dolphins. They are carnivores, meaning they eat meat. The name dolphin means “Fish with a womb”. They are mammals so they have live births, like humans. They use Echolocation to navigate and hunt. They can hear frequencies ten times more than that of an adult human. They have great eyesight in and out of the water.
More Facts…. Life span is 70-80 years. The bottlenose dolphin can live over 40 years. Are known for their agility and playful behaviors and are considered one of the most intelligent animals. Habitat/ Eating Habits Live in mostly shallow seas and in some rivers. Can be found in Florida, Hawaii and South America. They eat squid, herring, cod, mackerel, and crustaceans depending on the species. They eat about 22lbs-55lbs of a day!
Height and Weight The popular bottlenose dolphin is around 8ft long and weighs 440lbs-660lbs. The smallest dolphin is the Maui’s dolphin. It is 4ft long and weighs 90lbs. The largest dolphin is the Orca Whale. Male orcas can grow to 25ft and weigh about 19,000 lbs!!
Babies Once a baby is born the mother will quickly take it to the surface so it can breath. The baby will nurse from 11 months- 2yrs. It will stay with its mother until it is between 3-8yrs old. Usually only have one baby, twins are rare. Males are called bulls, females cows and the young are called calves.
Family They live in groups called Pods. Pods are usually made up of a dozen dolphins but there are super pods which have been known to have 1,000 dolphins. They can form strong social bonds.
Communication Dolphins communicate through a series of whistles, clicks and burst-pulsed sounds.
Sleep When dolphins sleep only one side of their brain goes to sleep. The other half remains awake so they can continue to breathe. This prevents drowning.
The odd Dolphin!! The Boto dolphin is PINK!! It’s a freshwater river dolphin that lives in the Amazon and Orinco Rivers in South America. It is a light pink color but when surprised or excited they become pinker!
