Urban Schooling within the “Shrinking Cities” Framework (Jane Jacobs, 1961, Death and Life of American Cities) • Lack of Industry to maintain jobs • Reduction of tax base in cities • Due to lack of jobs and relocation of industry • Funding choices • School funding formulas • War over education • Prison pipeline • Money to incarcerate over education • Educational inequity • Failure to deal with constitutional guarantee of equal treatment under the law • Universal declaration of human rights: Do we see education as an human right

Questions for Panelists to Address 1.        What in your background best prepared you to be an urban educator?2.       What do you think it means to be an effective urban educator?3.       For preservice teachers preparing to go into classrooms, what are the most important skills, knowledge and dispositions to develop to be prepared to teach in current urban settings?4.       What do you think are the biggest challenges for us as a society and us as the teaching profession in accomplishing the goal of providing effective schooling for all students, especially in urban schools?
