  1. Module 27 Thinking

  2. Prototypes – This is the mental picture we have of a concept. Imagine a hat. A mental picture may appear. While we know that all hats don’t look the same, the closer an example is to our prototype, the better we associate it with the concept (or category of hats). Whale – is it a fish? No, but it is unlike our prototype of mammal – seems more like a fish. Concepts

  4. Algorithms – the long but tried and true method of problem solving. May take a long time, but pretty reliable. Heuristics – simple. A short-cut way to solve the problem. Usually does a pretty good job of successfully solving the problem. Problem-Solving – it can be tricky.

  5. Insight – this is the “a ha!” moment. The light comes on (literally). I get it! This is an adaptive skill. Sometimes survival depends on it. Mental Set – If we have solved a problem successfully before, we approach it the same way again. This can be helpful, but can also keep you from solving problems that are not the same. More about thinking

  6. Intuition – like insight, a very helpful asset! This is the gut-feeling and immediate, unthinking, and unreasoned thought/feeling about something. It is adaptive. If it doesn’t seem right – it probably isn’t! • Some professions rely on intuition such as EMS/Firefighters, athletes, ER personnel, etc… It enables us to act quickly. Judgment: Good and Bad

  7. Availability Hueristic – generally helpful shortcuts can lead us astray. Some really smart people can make some really stupid decisions by not examining all sides of an issue or all types of solutions. • Short-sightedness is dangerous. Judgment: Good and Bad

  8. Why do events that happen rarely scare us so much?

  10. THEY STICK IN YOUR MIND AND SCARE YOU!

  11. Frankly, yes. Some problems seem too big and so we don’t do anything – we feel powerless… Unless… … there is a human face on the issue. For one, we will help. While, for many we may not… (Mother Theresa quote) Is it too overwhelming?

  12. This can be good or bad. Confident people report being happier, they make tough choices quicker, and they are seen as credible by others. On the other hand… OVERCONFIDENT MUCH?

Overconfidence can lead to personal relationship problems, economic troubles, difficulty at work, etc… Mortgage payments Time (projects/assignments) Credit card debt Taking the time to say/do the things you want to… (sky diving, Rocky Mountain climbing, bull riding,…you know what I am talking about.) OVERCONFIDENCECAN BE BAD!

  14. Here is what I believe… The best way to deal with the bias is to take the other side. If you have to defend what you don’t believe, you really consider the other side and may hold your original theory but are less likely to be bias in the face of new information. It is tough to change someone’s mind. If they hold a belief, they are more likely to believe things that reinforce that belief than things that are contrary to that belief. We hold biases. In the face of evidence that goes against our beliefs, we discount the information. Positively related to our belief – that information is definitely true!

  15. Framing – Same information, different effect! Ok… Statistics – what would you rather hear? The percent of time something works or the percent of time that it doesn’t? It really depends on what you are after! OPT IN? OPT OUT? SAME CHOICE (IN OR OUT) DIFFERENT OUTCOME! Organ Donation Example

  16. Better to make a decision sometimes after a break from thinking about it. Brain does dual processing and sifts through problem unconsciously. (remember when we talked about sleep and making better decisions after “sleeping on it”) Got a decision to make?

  17. Animal Culture??? • Diversity… How about animals?
