  1. Student Magazine Media Coursework Evaluation By Elliott Saul

  2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? • The masthead for the student magazine has to be eye-catching with an interesting font style and name, as well as the graphics. • The contents page needs to have images of what's inside the student magazine and which normally has a list of what's inside and the page number of where it is. • There is a list on the left side of my contents page saying what’s inside and shows some special features. • My front cover has black as the dominant colour, black makes it seem bold and the red gives a bit of brightness to it. The black and white images are like pop art photos and that relates to how students are at college.

  3. How does your media product represent particular social groups? • On the front cover of my magazine it has this pop art effect which represents the students as artistic teenagers. Also by “having New Bash Venues” by some students at night show that they are a little reckless. Also “Life After College” shows that students at Ludlow go onto university after college. The image of Chloe studying in the refectory means that students at Ludlow revise and do work in their free time, which shows that students are hard working. • In my student magazine I have tried to be less stereotypical by having some bash photos of students partying and another where one student is studying in their free time.

  4. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? • I think newsagents near college’s would distribute the student magazine because they would be near students that would want the magazine. • The college itself would sell the magazine because the students spend most of their time in the college and would want to know what is going on in the student world. Also the teachers at the college would want to buy the magazine because it gives them an insight of student life. • There would be other student magazine which would be a competition with mine. However I think my student magazine more modern because of its pop art style on the front cover.

  5. Who would be the audience for your media product? • My student magazine would be aimed at students aged 16 – 19 and teachers, this is because the magazine is relevant to student life and what the teachers are doing in college. • My magazine could also be fit for pupils at secondary schools, because it gives them an insight of what college is like and what they can do to prepare for when they go to college. • The audience type is for all genders but may be more fit more for male students because of what's inside the magazine and the style of the front cover.

  6. How did you attract/address your audience? • I have use a bold black colour against a white background to make it eye catching, also the colour red makes it more interesting and it keeps the readers attention. • I used publisher to create the layout of the magazine and then used “Gimp” to make the pop art effect on the front cover. • Making the title bold will also grab the readers attention and makes it clear what the magazine is about. Also by having the red outline of a box makes it stand out even more and makes it more important the other parts of the magazine.

  7. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? • I first used publisher to create the magazine but then found that it can only create a very simple layout and the tools it has doesn’t make the magazine interesting. Then I used Gimp and found out that the effects on it make the cover of my magazine a lot more interesting. • In Gimp there are a lot of useful tools to create an interesting image and the effects can make a magazine front cover look eye catching. Also gimp is very easy to use to edit photos and words making it a useful tool for editing. Also the wide range of editing tools makes it easy to choose which style is best fit for the magazine.
