Gas Exchange… alveoli and capillaries only one cell thick capillaries are almost the same diameter as red blood cells – contact! carbon dioxide diffuses from an area of high concentration (red blood cells coming from body tissues) to an area of low concentration (the lungs) oxygen also diffuses from an area of high concentration (the lungs) to an area of low concentration (red blood cells) occurs by diffusion.

  4. Inhalation… ribcage lifts up when intercostal muscles contract diaphragm pulls down as it contracts elastic lungs stretch and air flows in occurs when intercostals and diaphragm contract.

  5. Exhalation… ribcage lowers when intercostal muscles relax diaphragm lifts again as it relaxes air is compressed and exhaled from the lungs when intercostals and diaphragm relax.
