1. The Civil War Began: April 12,1861 By: Tawan Isaac Ended: April 9,1865.

2. Introduction… 1861-1865. America was a warzone. It was divided into 2 countries. The Union, and the Confederate. Why was this? Some say it was because of Slavery. Some say it was because of States Rights. Actually, it was a combination of the two. The Confederate(South) wanted more States rights. The Union(North) was against slavery. America was divided, with two very different visions. This marked the beginning of the Civil War.

3. Union vs. Confederate The Union outnumbered the Confederate 21 states to 11 states. But that didn’t stop the Confederate. They persevered, and continued to achieve their vision.

4. Union States California Connecticut Delaware Illinois Indiana Iowa Kansas Kentucky Maine Maryland Massachusetts Michigan Minnesota Missouri Nevada New Hampshire New York New Jersey Ohio Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island Vermont West Virginia These states were the ones that didn’t leave the U.S, and fought to bring everyone in harmony & peace.

5. Confederate States South Carolina Mississippi Florida Alabama Georgia Louisiana Texas Declared secession before Lincoln's election. Virginia Arkansas Tennessee North Carolina Declared secession after Lincoln's election.

6. Border States Non-Seceded slave states: Delaware Maryland. West Virginia Kentucky Missouri Delaware Maryland.

7. Main Leaders of the Union… Abraham Lincoln: President of Union during Civil War. Ulysses S Grant: Lieutenant General of the Union army. Nathaniel P. Banks: A Major General of the Union. Benjamin F. Butler: Another Major Gen. of the Union. These four helped the Union get closer to their vision. However, there were others who contributed also.

8. Main Leaders of the Confederate Robert E. Lee: A main General of the Confederate. Braxton Bragg: Another Gen. of the Confederate. Gen P.G.T Beauregard: Another helpful Gen. These three & more soldiers helped the Confederate get closer to better States Rights.

9. The Beginning… • The Civil War all started with the battle of Fort Sumter. Confederate forces fired on Union forces, and eventually conquered Fort Sumter. April 12–13, 1861 was the date.

11. First Battle of Bull Run Both the Confederate & Union fired on each other at Bull Run. The Union hoped to capture the Confederate’s capital of Richmond, VA, while the Confederate had to stand their ground. Union forces eventually retreated to Washington, D.C. July 21, 1861.

13. Casualties of Bull Run Union Confederate 2,896 1,982 Both sides realized the other wasn’t going to back down, and realized this was going to be a long & bloody war.

14. Battle of Gettysburg Confederate forces were moving to Union’s Philadelphia, PA in hopes to capture it & end the war. July 1–3, 1863. George Meade led Union. Robert E. Lee led Confederate.

16. Gettysburg Casualties. Union Confederate 23,231 total 23,055 total 12,693 killed 3,155 killed 5,830 wounded/missing 14,531 Injured 5,369 Captured or Missing.

17. 2nd Battle of Fort Fisher The Union moved to Fort Fisher in Wilmington, NC in hopes to taking it from the Confederate, and to hope to make the Confederate surrender. January 13-15, 1865.

18. 2nd Battle of Fort Fisher.

19. Casualties. Union Confederate 1,338 583 The Union won this battle.

20. Battle of Appomattox Courthouse. After so many victories, the Union knew they had the Confederate on the run. They knew this was going to be the last battle. Confederate’s leader Robert E. Lee had to hold out or else the Confederate would not achieve their vision. April 9, 1865.

22. Endgame Yep, the Battle of Appomattox Courthouse was the end of the Civil War. General Ulysses S. Grant forced General Robert E. Lee to surrender the Confederate Army. The Union had gained their vision & victory.

24. Vehicles of the Civil War… Horses.. Trains…

25. Alliances The Confederate- The Confederate needed help because they were outnumbered big time & they needed extra supplies. Great Britain & France gladly accepted. Great Britain. The Union didn’t need help. France.

26. How this war affected our lives. If the Civil War never happened, Slavery might still exist today. America would be divided, and in complete chaos. Another Civil War could possibly happen.
