National Arts & Humanities Month: Background • Established in 1993 • Celebrated every October in the United States • Initiated to encourage Americans to explore new facets of the arts & humanities in their lives, and to begin a lifelong habit of participation in the arts & humanities • It has become the nation's largest collective annual celebration of the arts

National Arts &Humanities Month: Goals • To create a national, state and local focus on the arts & humanities through the media • To encourage the participation of individuals, as well as arts, humanities and other organizations • To provide an opportunity for federal, state and local business, government and civic leaders to declare their support for the arts and humanities • To establish a highly visible vehicle for raising public awareness about the arts & humanities

October is Arts Month! • First time event for the Pikes Peak region • Community-wide “arts awareness” initiative • Everyone is invited to participate and benefit • Modest/realistic expectations for first year • Will become an annual event each October • Sponsored by the Anschutz Foundation and the Tiemens Foundation for the arts • Success will depend on collaboration with diverse cultural partners, across all creative disciplines

October is Arts Month! • In 2010, the region's 10-year Cultural Plan identified "increasing engagement, access and participation in cultural life" as a primary goal for our community • In 2013, COPPeR's Board approved a strategy to advance this goal through a regional advocacy campaign, now known as Arts Month • “Arts” should be interpreted broadly to include a wide range of cultural, heritage and creative partners

  6. October is Arts Month! OBJECTIVEIncrease awareness and participation in the arts in the Pikes Peak region during the month of October KEY MESSAGEArts Month is a great time to discover and engage the quality and diversity of our creative community!

Desired Outcomes • A community that is more aware of cultural offerings • Increase in attendance at your organization’scultural events and activities • Increase in giving to your organization’s annual fundraising campaign • Increase in visitors to PeakRadar.com(website benefits 700+ groups who post events) • Increase in “likes” to COPPeR and PeakRadar Facebook pages (benefits all future postings)

Measuring Success • Tracking metrics on PeakRadar.com • Tracking metrics on Facebook pages • Additional coverage in local and regional media • Data from partner organizations (attendance,memberships, earned revenue, donations, etc.) • Audience feedback/targeted survey tools • Anecdotal stories from partner organizations • How well did we, as a creative community,collaborate with each other?

Overview of Marketing Plan • Drive traffic to a new website landing page at:www.peakradar.com/artsmonth • Creation of “Arts Month Tool Kit” • Paid/in-kind advertising through local media • Local government proclamations • COPPeR emails, newsletters, social media, etc. • Grassroots promotional support from localarts & cultural organizations and area artists • Surprise Us!

Paid and Free Advertising • $10K from Anschutz Foundation • $1K from Tiemens Foundation for the arts(more funding = more paid advertising) • Public Radio (KCME, KRCC, etc.) • Print (Independent, The Gazette, CSBJ, etc.) • Billboards (Lamar) • Facebook (paid boosts) • Assorted (banners, flyers, buttons, t-shirts, etc.) • Free exposure on social media and in local press

Here’s How You Can Engage • Post your event information to PeakRadar.com • Link to peakradar.com/artsmonth • Connect to COPPeR’s social media • Reference Arts Month in your messaging • Provide space for Arts Month ads in programs/playbills • Use your social media and email platforms • Include articles in your newsletters • Make announcements during curtain speeches • Let us know if you do something new and/or creative FIND YOUR OWN WAY TO CELEBRATE ARTS MONTH!

Some Key Arts Month Dates • Arts Month Kickoff Party: Saturday, September 27 (details TBD) • Arts Walks: October 3 & 17 (Downtown Colorado Springs,Old Colorado City, Monument, Woodland Park, Manitou Springs) • Business & Arts Lunch: Tuesday, October 7(COPPeR & Regional Business Alliance) • Awards for Artistic Excellence: Wednesday, October 15(Pikes Peak Arts Council) • 1st Annual Choral Confluence Concert: Sunday, October 19(new event featuring 8 local choral groups) • AIR Shift Workshop: October 24-26(COPPeR & Arts Incubator of the Rockies) Please post all events and activities on PeakRadar.com
