SHMS Mission Statement • Honoring the developmental uniqueness of young adolescents, we at StrathHaven Middle School aim to provide all students with a comprehensive education that empowers them to be responsible and confident learners.We will cultivate the potential in every student to achieve personal success and to contribute responsibly to the school community and society at large. By providing engaging and diverse opportunities both inside and outside the classroom, we strive to develop students who are capable of clear and sound reasoning as they prepare to enter high school.

Elementary to Middle School Daily Schedule Elementary School Middle School SHMS NPE SRS WES • One teacher for each academic subject (five total teachers per day) • One teacher for each special area, which changes each trimester • Additional support teachers for individuals and small groups as needed • Independent transitions between classrooms throughout the day • One main teacher for subject areas and homeroom • One specials teacher per day • Additional support teachers for individuals and small groups as needed • Teacher-guided transitions between classrooms throughout the day

Elementary to Middle School Parent Teacher Conferences Elementary School Middle School NPE SRS WES SHMS • All parents receive a time slot for a parent teacher/conference about their children, regardless of performance. • Parents receive a conference invitation only if the team has concerns about the student and/or their performance. • Given the team nature of sixth grade, teachers are available to meet with parents as a team throughout the year upon formal request.

ELA M • Math • Three math levels: • Math 6 • Enriched Math 6 • Accelerated Math 6/7** The same curriculum is used at all levels.** • Students must meet specific benchmarks in order to be eligible for Enriched and or Accelerated level Math classes: • Chapter Tests • Quarter Averages • Benchmark Tests • PSSA scores from previous year • District Placement Test • Language Arts • Balanced Literacy Approach • Rooted in the work of Lucy Calkins and Teacher’s College of Columbia University • Pulls from additional models developed by Penny Kittle, Kelly Gallagher, Nancie Atwell, and KyleneBeers • Focuses on refining critical thinking and analytic skills introduced and practiced in fifth grade • Reading and writing are integrated within the block • Grammar and vocabulary instruction occurs at various points within the workshop structure

Extra Help On Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday of each week teachers are available to work with students in all subject areas. Late Bus There is a 3:00 p.m. late bus home for students.
