    1. Differentiated Instruction Session #6: Tiered Assignments Part II

    2. 1-Minute Review… What is tiering and why should we do it?

    3. Steps in tiering: Identify your objective(s). Preassess students. Design an activity that focuses on the objective(s). Design additional tiers as needed. Assign students to the appropriate tasks. Be flexible!

    4. What can be tiered? Classroom activities Resources, texts Discussion questions Homework assignments Items on tests and quizzes Learning contracts Center activities Independent and small group projects ANYTHING!!

    5. Tiered Projects: Landforms Objectives: The students will understand that geographic location affects many characteristics of a place. The students will be able to demonstrate the relationship between location and various geographic characteristics.

    6. Tier 1: Explore a Region Choose a US region to study in depth. Using the textbook, provide information about your region using the outline provided. Research your region and its landforms. Organize your findings on the graphic organizer provided. Create a map and key that illustrate geographic aspects of your region.

    7. Tier 1: Explore a Region (cont’d) 5) Create 2 different graphs that show information (for example, vegetation, climate) about your region. 6) Create a poster displaying geographic information about your region. 7) Create a painted salt map of your region and its landforms. Provide a key.

    8. Tier 2: Create a Country Provide 2 ways of locating your country: in terms of already existing places and using latitude and longitude. Create a scale map of your country. Include 6 different landforms (at least 1 mountain or mountain range) and 4 bodies of water. Create a way to show vegetation. Create a way to show climate regions.

Tier 2: Create a Country (cont’d) 5) Create a way to show your country’s natural resources and how they benefit your country. 6) Choose 2 of the following: Identify indigenous animals Select a location for a major city Create a slogan and bumper sticker Write a speech to promote tourism Make a list of imports and exports

    10. Tiered Assignments: Theme in Romeo and Juliet Tier 1: Create a collage using current magazine pictures that demonstrate the themes of R&J at work in the present Tier 2: Create a one-page news bulletin that summarizes the events of R&J that best illustrate a theme of your choosing. You must also address a current event that incorporates the same theme.

    11. Questions to consider as you tier… Am I really sticking to my original objective OR have I gotten off track? (BE CRITICAL!) Is each of the tiers respectful of my students? How should students be grouped? What management considerations do I need to think about? How can students who have completed different tasks share their work and learning? (Closure)
