  1. On-line Geometric Modelling Daniela Velichová Mechanical EngineeringFaculty Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Slovakia http://www.stuba.sk/ This presentation is funded with support from the European Commission, Leonardo da Vinci Programme, Community Vocational Training, Project No. 2006 - SK/06/B/F/PP - 17743, EVLM – European Virtual Laboratory of Mathematics

  2. e-Learning 2 concepts of e-learning instructional material design since 1990s • Traditional concept – development of complex learning materials comprising all course material in large educational modules, (electronic courses) mostly utilised in e-reading. • New concept – recent development of small supportive learning materials called "learning objects", focused on separate themes and topics and utilizing interactive power of ICT, semantic web, on-line calculations and visualisations. • object – oriented learning • RLO - Reusable Learning Objects"

  3. e-LearningStrategiesof object oriented learning • - decomposition of existing course material into smaller units "learning objects" • - open architecture for development of online learning materials • - teaching centred on the needs and interests of the learner • - learning to occur anytime, anyplace, permanently available • - customization and flexibility of contents, forms and learning environment • - on-line visualisation and calculations • - interactive approach • Personalisation of education

  4. RLO in e-learningReusable Learning Objects • RLOs are self-standing, self-contained modular pieces of course material appropriately annotated with metadata. • They may be combined to form larger educational interactions, traditional modules, but in a modular way. • They might be reused in different contexts. • They can be easily modified. • They contain interactiveelements supporting self-educationin acquisition process. • They contribute to the faster development and higher quality of he instructional content. • They help to develop large and colourful instructional materials.

  5. RLO in e-learninghttp://ieeeltsc.org/ The IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee working definition: “RLO is any entity, digital or non digital, which can be used, reused or referenced during technology supported learning". Examples of technology-supported learning include • computer-based training systems, interactive learning environments, intelligent computer-aided instruction systems, distance learning systems, collaborative learning environment Examples of "Learning objects" • multimedia instructional resources (audio-video, CD, DVD, ) • electronic learning text materials (pdf, html, xml) • learning standards, outcomes and competencies • educational software and software tools (CAS – a ich súbory) • interactive applets (jsp java applications) • on-line calculations (webMathematica, Maplets) • visualisations and illustrations (graphical files)

  6. RLO in e-learningBasic properties of RLO • - simple instructional text documents explaining basic concepts of the relevant disciplines • - relatively short, brief and informative • - extractable or stand-alone materials • - in the form of modular unitseasy to be combine to larger units • - usable on standard platforms without specific software needs, only standard web browsers and some common plug-ins which are available free for download from Internet for viewing objects • - tagged and labelled as to what they contain and what they teach • - searchable by specific key-words • - freely accessible in on-line databases

  7. RLO in e-learning RLO inMathematics There exist many solutions for presentation of mathematical learning materials on web • Traditional text documents – pdf, x-html files Presentation mode, mathematical expressions in the form of figures; changes to source text and interactive input are not possible • Web-ready software: Math View (Maple), webMathematica (Wolfram Research), interactive java applets (GeoGebra), interactive animations (Flash), etc. Interactive mode, on-line calculations and illustrations with user data input; changes to source text are possible only in the source software • Semantic xml files with embedded MathML coding of mathematical formulas Presentation and interactive mode, compatibility with coding in CAS

  8. EVLM portal European Virtual Laboratory of Mathematics • Net of national portals hosting databases of electronic instructional materials in national languages of 8 partner European countries – BG, CZ, ES, FI, HU, IE, SK, UK • Central portal with on-line database of educational materials available in English • Information on files types of instructional documents • FACTs, RLOs, Problems, Modules • Distribution of materials according to mathematical subjects: Fundamental Mathematics (secondary school level), Algebra, Calculus, Geometry, Numerical Analysis, Probability and Statistics, Multivariable Calculus, Difference and Differential Equations, Optimisation, History of Maths, Maths Games • Team work on development of e-learning educational resources • Materials freely accessible on Internet at address http://www.evlm.stuba.sk

  22. RLO in e-learningSummary • Production investment - materials freely accessible on Internet - easily adjustable educational texts - continuous development and inclusion of new RLOs • Flexibility - choice from many different materials with the same topic - free grouping of materials to units according to particular needs • Pedagogical aspects - supportive to self-education and creativity of learners - fostering interest in mathematics by attractive interactive products • Expenses of final users - no need to own expensive CAS products (Maple, Mathematica) - source materials available free for all interested party at any time • Team cooperation of authors - distribution of work for the common beneficiary - large amount of shared materials in on-line database

  23. EVLM in e-learningInvitation Visit Central portal, and 7 national portals of • EuropeanVirtual Laboratory ofMathematics at the addresshttp://www.evlm.stuba.sk/ where many different materials can be found to support the education of MathematicsinEnglish, Bulgarian, Czech, Finish, Hungarian, Irish, Slovak, Spanish This presentation is funded with support from the European Commission, Leonardo da Vinci Programme, Community Vocational Training, Project No. 2006 - SK/06/B/F/PP - 17743, EVLM – European Virtual Laboratory of Mathematics
