  1. Is this water clean?

  2. Types of Stream monitoring • Physical • Chemical • Biological

  3. Physical • Watershed survey • Visual assessment of the stream – erosion, vegetation on banks, smell, color, etc. • Stream flow

  4. Chemical • Temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, turbidity, etc. • Labs test for specific pollutants, such as heavy metals. Photo Credit: Shannon Carnagie

  5. Biological • Aquatic Macroinvertebrates (insects &crustaceans) • Aquatic – Living in water • Macro – Large enough to see with naked eye • Invertebrate – No backbone

  6. Why Macroinvertebrates? • Sensitivity to pollution varies • Live underwater and breathe dissolved oxygen • Allows us to see what the water quality has been over a longer period of time

  7. Water Quality Rating • Diversity • Sensitivity to Pollution

  8. Activity • Critter Cubes– pg. 43/addendum pg. 5

  9. Website

  10. You can… • Post stream monitoring data • Photos, Videos • Interactive project map • Additional resources

  11. Next Steps • Curriculum • Run programs on your own • Set up a program leaders training • Already monitoring? • Submit your data • Website • Sign up for a program page • Explore the resources
