Digitisation • Progress to date: Policies now exist is many Member States, and internal coordination networks have been established Some best practice projects have been identified, but more are needed that are useful for small/local institutions A EU-wide status report has be produced on digitisation policies and programmes A EU-wide Quality Framework is needed for cultural content

  6. Long-term Digital Preservation • Issues: What is the cost and scale of the problem? How to ensure that governments and institutions are fully aware about the problem? What guidence is needed? Focus on data creators Recognise the skills deficit, and decide what new skills will be needed Build a large-scale multidisciplinary and multi-institutional collaboration Take collective responsibility for long-term access

New eCulture Landscapes • Focus ~1500 man-years of research effort on digital culture • Fund 110 projects since 1999 • 688 participants • 506 different organisations from museums, libraries, archives, industry, government and research (40% cultural actors, 30% industry, 30% research) • Partners from 35 countries • >90 M€ funding in cost-shared projects • Av. funding 1.6 M€ for RTD (75% of budget) • Av. funding 0.55 M€ for AM (12%) • Av. funding 0.75 M€ for TN (8%) • Av. funding 0.172 M€ for take-up (5%) What we do:

FP 6 and Access to Cultural Heritage Objective:To develop advanced systems and services that help improve access to Europe‘s knowledge and educational resources (including cultural and scientific collections) and generate new forms of cultural and learning experiences. Improving accessibility, visibility and recognition of the commercial value of Europe's cultural and scientific resources, by developing:

Digital library services • Advanceddigital libraries services,providing high-bandwidth access to distributed and highly interactive repositories of European culture, history and science • Focus on shared test-beds and increased cultural-research cooperation • Building on existing portfolio of projects • Including digital memory management • Remember broadband objectives of eEurope 2005

Intelligent heritage and tourism • Environments for intelligent heritage and tourism,re-creating and visualising cultural and scientific objects and sites for enhancing user experience in cultural tourism • Focus on enhancing user experience • Addressing the common needs of Europe’s museums, monuments, sites, etc., and not a specific museum, monument, site, .... • eLearning, tourism, eCommerce can support the core focus on culture • An effective network should include take-up in networks and/or “demo” projects under STRP

Preservation and digitisation • Advanced tools, platforms and services in support of highly automateddigitisationprocessesand workflows, digitalrestoration and preservationof film and video material, and digital memory management and exploitation • Focus on structuring new research communities around preservation • Substantially reduce the cost of digitisation • Lower barriers for institutional investment in long-term digital preservation • Provide an industrial platform for film and video restoration and preservation

Inventory • A survey of the holdings of ten major European broadcast archives found the following contents: • 1 million hours of film • 1.6 million hours of video • 2 million hours of audio recordings • Total European holdings of broadcast material are probably 10 times larger, about 46 million hours • Total European audiovisual holdings are at least double, about 100 million hours ! • Most of this material is : • 1) Analog 2) Original 3) In Danger • (Source Richard Wright, Presto Survey)

Objectives • To offer to televisions, radios, private companies, institutions, small archives, general public; the possibility of developing a patrimonial initiative centred on preservation and exploitation of their audiovisual archives. • This will be achieved through technological and industrial innovations, and will be implemented by ensuring the set-up of facilities and services that will provide to these actors an integrated, efficient, scalable and affordable preservation service.

DELOS Mission • DELOS mission is to significantly contribute to the delivery of the Grand Vision: “Digital Libraries should enable any citizen to access all human knowledge any time and anywhere, in a friendly multimodal, efficient and effective way, by overcoming barriers of distance, language and culture, and by using multiple Internet-connected devices.” • First phase: research and cross fertilization between research and development • Second phase: buiding of large scale testbeds and prototypes • Third phase: building of industrial-strength generic DL technologies • DELOS aims at bringing together the major European teams (research, users, industry) interested in DL-related areas, with the goal of developing the next generation DL technologies

  32. “Greek Temple” metaphor • In order to illustrate these three areas and account for their interrelationships, throughout this proposal the well-known metaphor of the Greek temple will be used: • the infrastructure area will be equated to the foundations of the temple; • the application services area will be equated to the pillars of the temple; • the sustainability area will be equated to the roof of the temple.

  34. Test beds • Four main application scenarios have been defined together within the Bricks Constituency and user groups • Access to Culture, reconstruction of Knowledge • Management of Culture: Small and Medium Museums • Creation of Culture: living memory • Digital Texts: scriptorium

Integrated Project • BRICKS aims at integrating many European Cultural Objects and Content from different countries, in the same timeit willintegrate different typologies of competencies and background (research, business, technology, art and culture). • BRICKS is integration of concrete objectives (four main user applications) with a ambitious vision of the future use of technologies in the Digital Cultural Heritage. • BRICKS aims to design and develop an advanced infrastructure to integrate resources and services for cultural heritage users. • BRICKS is the integration between national funded projects and results already achieved in the EC IST projects.

Open Project • BRICKS will use of open standards and the open source software development approach • BRICKS is based on an open community to enlarge and enforce its resources and input from researchers, scientists, art professionals and users • BRICKS is open to expansion, by inserting new application scenarios and other project results in a "plug and play" manner.

Innovative Project • BRICKS employ a service-oriented approach, focusing on the right added value for the user, in contrast to the traditionalcontent-oriented approach • BRICKS relies on a distributedopen infrastructure, in order to reduce the cost of development and deployment of new services by maximising the re-use of existing results, and to reduce maintenance costs by eliminating the need for a centralised organisational and/or technical infrastructure. • BRICKS sees global semantics as an evolutionary process, emerging from local interactions and agreements in order to overcome linguistic and ontological barriers and realise a shared knowledge space.
