  2. Profusely • Spending; giving freely in large amount, often to excess • The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green.

  3. Assembled • To bring together; gather in one place • The children assembled first, of course.

  4. Boisterous • Rough and noisy; jolly and rowdy • School was recently over for the summer and the feeling of liberty sat uneasily on the most of the; they tended to gather together quietly for awhile before they broke into boisterous play.

  5. Reprimands • A formal one by a person in authority • Their talk was still of the classroom and the teacher, of the books and reprimands.

  6. Surveying • The one who surveys • Surveying their own children, speaking of planting and rain, tractors and taxes

  7. Reluctantly • Unwilling; disinclined; struggling in opposition • Soon, the women, standing by their husbands, began to call their children, and the children came reluctantly, having to be called four or five times.

  8. Hastily • Moving or acting with haste; speedy; quick; hurried • He held it firmly by one corner as he turned and went hastily back to his place in the crowd.

  9. Conducted • Personal behavior; way of acting • The lottery was conducted by Mr. Summers.

  10. Jovial • Endowed with: characterized by a hearty; pertaining to the god. • He was a round-faced, jovial man and he ran the coal business, and the people were sorry for him.

  17. Perfunctory • Performed merely as a routine duty. • “..a perfunctory, tuneless chant that had been rattled off duly each year…”

  18. Lapse • A slip or error; failure. • “…to walk among the people, but years and years ago this part of the ritual had been allowed to lapse..”

  19. Interminably • Incapable of being terminated. • “He seemed very proper and important as he talked interminably to Mr. Graves and the Martins.”

  20. Disengaged • To release from attachment. • “ A man disengaged himself from the crowd and came forward.”

  21. Gravely • In a grave or sober manner • She watched while Mr. Graves came around from the side of the box, greeted Mr. Summers gravely and selected a slip of paper from the box.

  22. Petulantly • Moved to or showing sudden, impatient irritation, especially over some trifling annoyance • “There’s always been a lottery,” he added petulantly.

  23. Stoutly • Bulky in figure, heavily built; corpulent; fat

  24. Daintily • In a refined manner • Nancy was twelve, and her school friends breathed heavily as she went forward switching her skirt, and took a slip daintily from the box.

  25. Defiantly • Characterized by defiance; boldly resistance. • She hesitated for a minute, looking around defiantly, and then set her lips and went to the box.
