The Mission of the IOI is to ensure the sustainability of the oceans as “the source of life”, and to uphold and expand the principle of the common heritage as enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. IOI also strives to promote the concept of Pacem in Maribus – Peace in the Oceans - and ocean management and conservation for the benefit of future generations.

IOI was established in 1972 and its Headquarters are in Malta • The IOI is a global network of 25 Operational Centres and their host institutions. • At least half of the IOI’s Operational Centres are located in countries where coral reefs are an important part of the coastal ecosystem • Other IOI Centres are engaged in reef work

  5. The IOI is a partner in the Year of the Reef • IOI’s work with coral reefs is currently poorly documented. The goal of IOI’s engagement with IYOR is to document and publicise its work with coral reefs; topics to be covered include: • Marine Biodiversity • Socio-economic aspects of coral reefs • Alternative livelihoods • Development & Management of MPAs • Ocean Policy • Women & Youth Engagement • Capacity Building & Awareness Raising

  6. To collate success story case studies solicited from IOI Centres and their host institutions and partners. The topics will be selected from those mentioned above. • To edit the case studies, and organise them in a standard format and a length of not more than 1,000 words per study • To compile the case studies in a report to be widely distributed

  8. The report is planned for preparation and publication by the IOI jointly with partners, before the end of IYOR and according to the following format: • Preface • Foreword • Introduction & background – the IOI perspective • Case studies (up to 50) • Conclusions & recommendations • Acknowledgements

  9. A limited number of hard copies • Wide distribution of CD versions • Posting on the IOI and IYOR websites
