  7. The Press Release

  8. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Competition is Healthy Says Lemonade Stand Queen Hamilton, New Zealand - November 12, 2012 - Increased competition in the local lemonade stand market should be welcomed, according to the operator of popular lemonade stand "Shelly's Pure Lemonade". 12-year-old Shelly Smith has been selling her home-made brand of lemonade from the footpath in front of her parents' North Street home for 18 months and has seen the highs and lows of the trade. "Stands come and go," says Ms. Smith, "but when there are more stands around the vendors are more serious. They try harder and make a better product. That gives our customers confidence and sales go up.“ In recent months the number of lemonade stands on North Street has risen from three to five. Experts believe this trend will continue, with the possibility of two or even three new stands before the end of summer. Ms Smith feels that a stable supply of lemonade will also benefit the streets' economy. "People know that if they are thirsty, North Street is the place to come. With plenty of lemonade stands on this street, it doesn't matter if some of the vendors take a day off. The customer is never disappointed so they always come back.“ Shelly Smith is a sole trader of lemonade and occasional cookies. Her stand at 223 North Street is usually open weekdays after school and weekends, except when she is playing with her friends or watching a movie. Now the national chain has returned to the college town to sponsor the First Annual Chapel Hill-Durham Marathon. The race will take place on April, 27th and has already attracted many well-known marathoners, including multi-race winners Herb Putkin and Shelly Walters. “Morning Mist is all about health and staying young,” said company CEO Manny Squire, “What better way to give back than to have a road race between these two great college towns.” Morning Mist was founded by Squire and college roommate Tracy Scroggins as a small health food store in Chapel Hill near the University of North Carolina campus. The company grew to several stores in the Raleigh area, including one in Durham near Duke University. Morning Mist has expanded to forty-five full-size grocery stores nationwide. “The race will start in front of the Duke store and follow highway 501 to the original Chapel Hill store,” said company president Scroggins. “We hope this becomes a great tradition.” Morning Mist Health Food was founded in 1989. It is headquartered in Raleigh, NC, and employs 12,500 people in the US and Canada. It is listed on NASDAQ as MMHF. For more information contact Bill Jones at bjones@gmail.com ###

  10. Steps…. • 1. Decide when you are sending out the release. It is always best to send out your release after 11AM EST, any day besides Friday and Monday unless you have hard news. Also decide whether the release is "FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE" or not. If not, include the specific date and time that you want the publication to make your press release public knowledge. Write the release date and time or "FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE" at the top of your press release.

  11. 2. Create a catchy headline that accurately summarizes your press release. Your press release's headline can be one line or have a subheading as well. Just remember you are competing against hundreds of other press releases on the editor's desk. When editors do not have time to sit and read every single press release that comes in, they sometimes just take a glance at the headline.

  12. 3. Compose the body of your press release. A short (3-4 paragraphs), newsworthy press release will grab the attention of editors, which will in turn get you publicity-and for only the cost of emailing, faxing or mailing the release. The release has to highlight the uniqueness of your business - what differentiates you from your competitors.

  13. 3. Include a short, concise company profile or business owner bio at the bottom of the release. If the editors have never heard about your company, this is the place to give them some additional background information or to give them your standard company description.

  14. 4. After writing your release, edit it and re-edit it. Get rid of words that are not necessary. Make sure the sentences are easy to read and even easier to understand. Use strong and lively words in your release. Format your press release to be double-spaced on one page and at the end of the release type "# # #" so the editors know they have reached the end of your press release. Remember when you distribute the press release to only distribute it to publications where the readers would be interested in your subject and make sure the release is real news and not an advertisement.

  15. Exit Card • On the note card you are given, please let me know: • 1. What you feel you did really well on today • 2. What you are still struggling with and probably need more explanation about
