Introductions • The thesis should be in the introduction • Get out basic facts (what you’re going to be talking about in the essay) • Bring the reader in • Don’t use a cheesy attention getter • There should be a topic or controlling idea or thesis • The thesis should be at the end of the introductory paragraph • Giving background

  5. Introductions • A good introduction orients the reader. • To orient • Give a sense of where you are (what is the setting? when?) • Give a sense of where you are coming from (who? Identifying the voice) • Give a sense of where you want yourself and the audience to go • Thesis • Audience for Essay 2 • People who are in a position to make changes at the school that is important for your story • Administrators • Teachers • Counselors • Parents • Students

  6. Introductions • A good introduction orients the reader. • A good introduction introduces your essay and your essay only. • A good introduction is only slightly broader than the body of the essay
