  11. Back-to-Back scenes • Analyze the author’s choices: • How does Valdez depict the press? What impact does this depiction have on your reading?

  12. The author depicts the press by making them seem almost obnoxious -Katie. PRESS DEPICTION “How about it?? What’s the scoop on the sleepy lagoon? Sex? Violence? Marijuana?” Obnoxious Seedy? judgemental The press is shown to be prejudmental. They are “tagging” all Mexican American people like murderers. -Kevin Valdez makes the press act to be jumping to conclusion. -Nick

  13. The author depicts the press by making them seem almost obnoxious -Katie. PRESS DEPICTION “How about it?? What’s the scoop on the sleepy lagoon? Sex? Violence? Marijuana?” Obnoxious Seedy? judgemental Since the press assumes that the incident at sleepy lagoon was illegal, there assumption illustrates how little they expect of the Mexican American population. There constant questioning also makes it seem like they are digging for something dirty, almost like they want something bad to happen. Their depiction impacts the reading because it casts the press in a negative light.

  14. ALICE’S LINES: “Lieutenant, what exactly is the Sleepy Lagoon”… “Because they’re not allowed to swim in the public plunges?” PRESS DEPICTION What paper are you with, lady? The daily worker? Since Alice seems genuine or at least against judgement, She makes the press seems more judgementalin contrast.

  15. DEMEANING QUOTES: PRESS DEPICTION • It also doubles as a sort of lovers lane, which is why the gangs fight over it. • You can’t change the sports on a leopard • The fact that the press is only showing one side • Slums breed crime fellas • Old abandoned gravel put = swimming pool for Mex.

  16. Showing Henry in the two scenes with the interrogation and then his flashback with his family shows how he is humanized, when he goes back home to his family. He is a complete different person at home and is just a normal son in a normal family. It shows his two sides to him which gives us more to think about. Family and Beating Juxtaposition It shows two behaviors depending on who he is interacting his family humanizes him keeps him look like a loving person
