New Orleans/Charity program • Our patients: • Trauma patients • Those in the neighborhood who need emergency care • Patients who have historically come to the Charity system and feel that they get the best care there • Those without insurance – no “wallet biopsy” at University Hospital • Our missions: • Diversity within our residency to reflect the diversity of our patients • Cultural competence within the residency • Delivery of the best possible care to our patients

  6. Commitment to Diversity within the residency • Applications • Applications of medically underrepresented minority backgrounds are encouraged • Meet and greets are arranged for applicants to meet other residents and faculty from varied backgrounds

Commitment to Diversity within the residency • Mentoring • We are seeking out mentoring relationships with historically African American medical schools such as Meharry Medical College • We are pursuing additional relationships with summer programs and community colleges aimed at increased exposure of future physicians in our community to the field of Emergency Medicine • We look forward to an increased mentoring role with members of SNMA from both Tulane and LSU

Cultural Competence • Curriculum • Conference presentations aimed at exploring health care disparities and the history of racism in the medical field • Journal club articles examining health care disparities • Professionalism committee established to help medical residents and faculty communicate effectively with our patients
