This reaction varies with different catalyst material. Catalytic converter works on the principle of catalyzing a redox reaction. The catalytic converters are commonly used in automobiles, trucks, buses, motorcycle, and even industrial machines that work with the internal combustion engine. Catalytic converter is made-up of many materials; however the device’s core varies with the type of automobile. When catalytic converters are manufactured in bulk quantities, ceramic core can be cheap. Metallic cores can be less expensive when manufactured in small quantities, for example – such as in sports car where the low backpressure and reliability under high speed is essential. Both these cores are designed such that they provide maximum surface area to carry the catalyst wash-coat. Catalyst wash-coat is a conveyor for catalytic materials, which are used to spread the material over a large surface area. Aluminum oxide, silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide, or a composition of silica and alumina are used in making cores. The catalytic materials are suspended in the wash-coat before employed to the core. Wash-coat materials have rugged, uneven surface to enlarge surface area, which assists to magnify the catalytic activity of the surface available to act with the engine exhaust. The most commonly used elements in the catalytic cores are platinum, palladium and rhodium. The platinum is the most expensive metal in the lot. The platinum is used as both as reduction catalyst as well as oxidation catalyst. This is how the cores of this device work.
