Three Types of Success • Level 1: Removal of a waterbody from the 303(d) list for an impairing substance or stressor, • Level 2: Incremental improvement in water quality • Reduction in a pollutant or • Improvement in aquatic life • Level 3: Improvements in pollution or ecological restoration, e.g., removal of fish blockages or physical habitat improvements.

  3. Level 1 Options • Water Quality Analyses • pH Restoration • Biological Restoration Greater: • MD lists at watershed scale • Some watersheds are barely impaired • Bacteria Reductions • SAV increases (Sediment in Tidal Waters)

  4. Level 2 Options • Interim Progress Toward Level 1 • Localized Restoration • Long-Term Trend Analyses • MD Core/Trend Network • Non-tidal Rivers • Statistical Analyses of Nontidal Nutrients • Statistical Analyses of Biological Data

  5. Level 3 Options • Interim Progress on Level 2 • Habitat Restoration • Stream Blockage Removals • Wetlands Enhancement • Removal of Non-Native Species
