  3. Nouns Names a person, place, idea or thing • Six types of nouns… Common Proper Concrete Abstract Compound Collective

  4. Nouns • Have you ever read ‘The Crucible’ or any other play by Arthur Miller? • Call Mrs. Light if you are on her committee. • Mr. Cox and Mr. Layman are both new residents in the ‘A’ hallway. • The Louvre, a famous museum in Paris, was once a palace.

  5. Nouns • The beach was littered with debris from Hurricane Benny. • In the play, The Piano Lesson, a brother and sister engage in a conflict over a piano. • His discouragement with the treatment of animals raised his consciousness. • After he was burned by the fire he lost his bravery and confidence.

  6. Pronouns • A word used in place of a noun • Antecedent- the word a pronoun stands for ‘John bought a pen and a pencil; he will bring them tomorrow.’

  7. Personal Pronouns

  8. Personal Pronouns I want you to go with me. He went to her house with me and her. I spoke to you about her. I like it better than yours.

  9. Reflexive and Intensive He bought himself a car. He himself bought a car. She wrote herself a letter. She herself bought herself a letter.

  10. Demonstrative Pronouns this that these those This is my favorite dinner These are my best friends. Which is the best?

  11. Interrogative Pronouns who whom which what whose What is the answer? Who are you? Which is the best?

  12. Relative Pronouns that which who whom whose The man, who is over there, is nice. The person who is running for sheriff is my father.

  13. Indefinite Pronouns Is anybody going to be there? Neither will be at the reception. John better hire somebody. All boys are going to sleep.

  14. Adjectives What Kind?- Peter bought red shoes. Which One?- Sam took the last cookie. How Many?- He made several errors. How Much?- Jackie has enough money.

  15. Adjectives The tall and handsome actor waved. The actor, tall and handsome, waved. The ocean was rough. Sam is confident. Ray is depressed. Laura is sleepy.

  16. Adjective or Pronoun? Several athletes won awards. Several won awards. My car is faster than your car. My car is faster than yours. Your Dad is cool. Their house is awesome Neither likes coffee.

  17. Action Verbs John applauded his girlfriend. Lynn wrote a letter. The girl won. The child smiled.

  18. Linking Verbs They are happy. John is healthy. John looked very healthy. I looked at John. The food tasted good. I tasted the food .

  19. Verb Phrases I should leave the house now I have read the book. She was seen with her father. Mitch might have scored if he didn’t trip.

  20. Adverbs How? When? Where? To What Extent? Adverb Hints: Know the “Adverb Questions” !!!! Can be removed (like most adjectives) Usually next to the word they modify

  21. Adverbs Nick played (how?) ______________ . Gavin played (when?) _____________ . Joe P played (where?) _____________ . Tyler played (TWE?) ______________ .

  22. Adverbs The coffee is very hot He is extremely tall. The book was very long. She plays quite well. She went very quietly. Joe ran extremely slow. They returned home today. He reviewed the material yesterday

  23. -Adverb Practice- - Find the Adverbs (how, when, where, twe)- The food we eat links us to people everywhere. (1) Meg eagerly drinks her coffee early in the morning. (2) Coffee probably first came from Africa, and it still grows there. (4) Vanessa usually prefers hot tea now. (2) Hans always eats very nutritious meals. (2)
