NHS Scotland e-LibraryNational online knowledge service for Scotland’s health and social care • Serving a multiplicity of audiences, e.g. Clinical and non-clinical NHS staff, medical and nursing students, social care staff, patients and public • Providing extensive range of content type (over 500 ebooks, over 5000 ejournals, 50 databases, clinical guidelines, policy documents, patient information) • From many different content providers, e.g. OVID, EBSCO, Emerald, NLH, Scottish Government www.elib.scot.nhs.uk

Other Key features • A dedicated user interface • Built and integrated with FAST technology • Providing extensive range of content type and from many different content providers, e.g. Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Services (IRISS), NeLH, elibrary, NHS boards, University of Aberdeen, BBC, Good practice

  7. A single searchable index of content is created Content is either 1) CRAWLED into FAST, (using inbuilt or bespoke crawlers ) 2) IMPORTED into FAST, using a number of connectors – eg OAI-Harvesting, direct database connection, XML import. FAST Enterprise Search engine Single FAST Search Index

Challenges • Persuading to contribute • Open access fear • Tracking and recording of learning • Depositing resources in LOM format • Updating mechanisms - need to put in place system for updating content, e.g. via OAI harvesting, or other scheduled updating mechanisms • Information management work: Substantial initial outlay required to map into index profile and to test that content has populated the profile as required
