  2. The beginning… • Established in 1644 • Beijing was captured by LiZuheng • Ming Dynasty called on the Manchus of Manchuria (northeastern China) to help • Manchu took advantage of opportunity and established own dynasty • Led by Hong Taiji

  3. Where in the world?! • The Qing Dynasty is located in modern-day China.

  4. It’s how Old? • Established in 1644 • Lasted until 1911

  5. What happened?! • Banned Christianity in 1723 and became a Confucian country • Opium Wars - Britain and China fought over trade

  6. What else happened? • The Boxer Rebellion (1900) • The Boxers rebelled against Chinese Christians and attempted to invade foreign embassies in Beijing. • Killed thousands of Chinese Christians • Eight countries invaded China • Led to a weakened government

How in the world did it happen?! • The rise of the Qing: • When Ligden Khan, the last grand-Khan of the Mongols, died in 1634, his son Ejei surrendered to the Manchus and gave the great seal of the Yuan Emperor to Huang Taiji. HOW in the world did it happen?! • The fall of the Qing: “The fall and collapse of the Qing dynasty was caused by external and internal changes within and outside the dynasty, peasant revolts, the rise of Sun Yat-Sen and overall western influence.” • Trade imbalance between Britain and China • Civil wars- 1850 villagers broke out into the world’s bloodiest civil war known as the Taiping Rebellion • Deep financial trouble

  9. Why was It important? • Qing dynasty was the last imperial dynasty of China- the Republic of China was formed after it’s downfall

  10. Why wasn’t it conquered? • There had been a trade alliance between China and Europe, which is why Europe never needed to conquer them. As long as Europe got the land and goods it wanted, it was content. Europe eventually did begin to have influence in China after their trade franchise was dissolved.
