  1. Accelerator/Safety Lali Tchelidze Safetyworkpackageleader www.europeanspallationsource.se April 22, 2015

  2. Overview • Safety work package – expertise and responsibilities • Working scope • Current and future tasks • Summary

  3. Safety work package • Resources: • 2 full time employees • 1 part-time employee • 2 part-time employees (time limited) • A senior consultant (planned - time limited) • Expertise: • Radiation safety/Monte-Carlo codes • Two parallel accelerator models in MARS and FLUKA, additionally the front-end model in MCNPX • General safety (including cryogenic safety, fire safety, electrical safety, etc.) • Role: advise and propose solutions to ACCSYS project management and ES&H • Meetings: bi-weekly

  4. Working scope • Examples: • Re-evaluation of the linac tunnel HVAC system. • Composition of the actual clay material used in the construction. • Strategy for waste handling. • Centralized zoning approach. • Cryogenic safety: plan for documenting, reviewing and approving cryogenic systems. • Participation in upcoming design reviews and audits • Participation in preparation of ESS safety policies

  5. Some tasks, 2015

  6. Dealing with tasks • Task assignment and follow-up is done in RADSF* JIRA (also in various boards). (* Username: essreviewer, pass: AR22015) • Clear purpose, specific goals, specific dates. • Final technical notes reviewed and approved in CHESS.

  7. Accelerator Safety and Radioprotection Home Link: Accelerator Safety and Radioprotection * * Username: essreviewer Pass: AR22015

  8. Accelerator shielding • Approved ESS linac prompt radiation shield design criteria: • ESS-0008309 by L. Tchelidze • ESS-0008351 by L. Tchelidze • “Baseline” shielding design (both analytical and Monte-Carlo analysis): • ESS-0007143 by L. Tchelidze • ESS-0011759 by L. Tchelidze • ESS-0013575 by E. Pitcher • Procedures: ESS Procedure for designing shielding for safety (as from March 18, 2015) • ESS-0019931 by G. Muhrer • Pictures demonstrating changes

  9. Geometry status • Main model – in MARS (L. Tchelidze, M. Jarosz) • Parallel model – in FLUKA (L. Esposito, L. Lari) • Warm linac model – in MCNPX (R. Bevilacqua) L. Esposito R. Bevilacqua M. Jarosz

  10. Other safety issues • Assessment of the tunnel ventilation system • Confinement classification (ISO-17873) based on DAC • Minimum depression level • Radiological requirements • Fire-control and ODH control requirements • Fire safety • Fire loads assessment in the tunnel – no sprinklers required • Similar work ongoing for klystron gallery • Smoke extraction • Cryogenic safety (ESHAC recommendation!) • ODH calculations model to assess risks • Safety documentation to be submitted to ES&H • List of mitigation measures • Working group in place

  11. Summary-1 • A safety group in accelerator division to support/answer safety questions & issues related to the accelerator • We have expertise to deal with both general safety and radiation safety issues • We have expertise to run Monte-Carlo simulations as needed • Serves as an advisory group to ACCSYS project management and ES&H • In charge to: • Address shielding/radio-protection issues • Address general safety issues • Support ES&H division in licensing process • Answer ESHAC recommendations • Be involved in PDR, CDR, WP-s annual audit • Support development of ESS safety manual

  12. Summary-2 • Done: • First iteration for assessment of the change requests for shielding • Front-end building (partially) • HEBT loading bay and stubs (partially) • Emergency exit in A2T area • Smoke evacuation design from prompt radiation point of view • Cryogenic vent line • Filling material • A2T cable penetration • On-going: • Updating MARS and FLUKA models • Detailed MC simulations to verify layout for radiation shielding • MC simulations for activation studies • ODH policy and strategy • Ventilation system • Smoke extraction system
