  5. The mosquito life cycle starts when an adult mosquito lays her eggs on water. The female mosquito first need a blood meal in order to lay her eggs This creates an egg raft of up to several hundred attached eggs.   6. The larva come to the surface and breathe through a siphon. The larva sheds its skin four times during the next several days. During this time period and between the molts the mosquito is called an instar After the fourth molt the mosquito changes into a pupa.   7. The pupa is similar to a butterfly chrysalis. The mosquito lives in the pupal case and cannot eat while there. While in the pupal case the mosquito breathes through two tubes on its back.   8. Once the mosquitoes hatch their average lifespan is about three weeks in the summer or as many as a few months in the winter in order to lay her eggs. Male mosquitoes feed on nectar and do not bite people. Once the female mosquito is ready to lay its egg it bites someone to get its blood meal and then lays its egg raft.
