  1. McGill University:Creating intellectual and economic wealth for our province Based on the Economic Impact Study conducted by Professor J. Handa and Mr. O. Mikhail, Department of Economics, McGill University, September 1997 January 1998

  2. This study covers: • The McGill-related inflows of funds from outside Québec • that create so much • intellectual andeconomic wealth • for our province.

  3. Montréal is rich inknowledge-based industries • They are driving economic growth. • They face global competition, daily. • They depend on McGill and other universities for well-educated graduates and research.

  4. McGill and global competition • McGill must compete to attract the best professors, researchers and students – who are free to choose other quality universities. • McGill’s faculty and students give Québec a priceless global network of contacts.

  5. McGill: A recession-proof creatorof income and wealth for Québec 1985-95: Inflows from outside Québec grew 60%: from $352 to $616 million. Millions of Dollars

  6. $616 million in McGill-related inflows in to Québec

  7. McGill makes Montréal Canada’s university research capital

  8. Quantifiable benefits for the Québec economy • Inflows also generate net gains in tax revenues

  9. McGill-related inflows of funds from outside Québec • Have resulted in total spending of $4.9 billion in Québec over the last 10 years. • Have grown steadily making McGill a recession- proof creator of income and wealth. • Contribute nearly half of the funding that makes Montréal Canada’s university research capital.

  10. Comparison of estimated McGill-related inflows to Québec versus inflows generated by the private sector due to exports, 1995 182$ millions BioChem Pharma 362$ millions Université McGill 443$ millions SNC-Lavalin 1 577 $ millions Alcan Aluminium

  11. Inflows to Québec grew 39% in 1985-90, and only 15.7% in 1990-95 • This declining spending begins a vicious circle: • Fewer professors meansfewerresearch dollars. • Fewerprofessors means fewerstudents (especially graduate level). • Risk of declinein McGill’s contribution to Québec’s intellectual and economic wealth.

  12. Every day, McGill adds to the intellectual capital and GDP of our province • McGill-related inflows to Québec – a major economic contribution. • Quality universities are a must – brainpower now drives economic growth. • McGill must maintain high standards to compete. • Maintaining funding strengthens McGill, creating intellectual and economic wealth for Québec.
