What will we do? • Effectively utilize waiting room time at free clinics • Offer patients personalized, helpful information about community resources • Help patients access resources in a timely manner • Make the waiting room a more pleasant and educational environment
Why are we doing it? • Patients complain about wasted time in the waiting room • Lack of resources is often a barrier to positive health outcomes • Patients & providers don’t know what resources are available • Even if they know, they don’t know how to access them (transportation, phones, forms) • Volunteers could be utilized more effectively
How will we do it? • Start at local free clinics that already have volunteers available • Reorganize community resources sheet to make it more patient-friendly • Tailor resource info to patient’s specific needs using surveys • Recruit volunteers from local colleges • OU students train volunteers to work one-on-one with patients • Volunteers help determine needs and then help patients access resources • Use a portable cart to organize materials, stock activities/food, provide forms • Funding needs: 3 carts, paper and ink, snacks, coloring supplies
