  1. Confirmation Class Lesson 7

  2. The Person and work of the Holy Spirit Decision Theology states that unbelievers can say a prayer and basically “pray Jesus into our heart.” Unfortunately many Christian churches state that in America. This goes against God’s Word! Lutherans correctly teach what we find in Ephesians 2 and John 1 and other places that - as we say in the definition of the 2nd article of the Creed: “I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him.”

  3. Why I cannot by my own thinking or choosing trust in Jesus as my Savior. • By nature I’m dead in sin. • 2. By nature I call God’s message foolishness. I am spiritually blind • 3. By nature I’m God’s enemy. Ephesians 2:1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins. I Corinthians 2:14 Romans 8:7

  4. The Holy Spirit gives me faith in Jesus as my Savior and Lord. Romans 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. I Corinthians 12:3 Acts 5:3-4 2. The Holy Spirit works faith in me through God’s Word and sacraments (a sacrament is a sacred act commanded by God that gives forgiveness through faith). 1. The Holy Spirit is true God along with the Father and the Son. Ephesians 2:8-9 Acts 2:38

  5. 3. The Holy Spirit’s work of bringing me to faith in Jesus is called: • Conversion (being turned around from unbelief to faith). • Regeneration (being born again) Ephesians 2:8-9 John 1:12-13 John 3:3

  6. Luke 14:16-24 II Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. Acts 7:51 “You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit! 4. God wants everyone to be saved. Those who reject the Holy Spirit’s call are lost by their own fault.

  7. The Holy Spirit also equips me to serve Jesus after I become a believer in Jesus. 1. He helps me grow in knowledge and understanding of the Bible (“enlightens” me). II Peter 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.

  8. John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. Galatians 5:22-23 The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Ephesians 2:10 2. He produces good works of gratitude in my life (“Sanctifies” me)

  9. I Thessalonians 1:3 We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 2:13 3. He keeps me in the true faith by His Word and sacraments. I Corinthians 6:11 He “sets me apart”… FROM the unbelieving world into a fellowship with Jesus FOR a new life of serving God in all that I do
