Timeline of BC MIR • Sept 2004: BC MIR passed, effective Sept 2006 • All meat sold in the province must be inspected & slaughtered in a licenced facility • Free assessment service • 12 licenced slaughter plants • April 2006: BC MIR effective date changed to Sept 2007 • BC gov’t contributes $5 million to aid industry transition to new regulations & commits to pay 100% of inspection costs until 2012

Timeline of BC MIR continued • Sept 2007: BC MIR amended to include Class C (transitional) licence • Operating prior to Sept 2007 outside meat inspection area • Plans approved by BCCDC • Meat not inspected (labeling required) • Can’t be sold to food premises • Product not for resale (can’t enter meat inspection area) labeling requirement • Valid for 6 months (potential renewal) • Graduated enforcement by regional Health Authorities
