  1. AN OVERVIEW OF THE By: John Hunsicker (Chairman)

  2. RP/ALARA PWR ASSOCIATION VISION • The PWR RP/ALARA Association is committed to continual improvement in radiation protection standards and performance at our utilities. This is implemented through the following principles: PWR

  3. RP/ALARA PWR ASSOCIATION PWR RP/ALARA Association Principles • The reduction of radiation dose to the workers of our plants, both utility employees and contractor personnel is a key measure of our success as a Association. • The free exchange of pertinent information, data and lessons learned will be pursued in a constructive dialogue and atmosphere of mutual respect. • The PWR RP/ALARA Association strives to provide a high quality product in the most cost effective manner. • The Association will develop and implement an integrated and consistent information exchange process by which issues are effectively identified, prioritized, analyzed, and communicated in a timely manner.

  4. RP/ALARA PWR ASSOCIATION PWR RP/ALARA Association Principles Continued • The PWR RP/ALARA Association supports effective outage work planning develops information exchange and communicates lessons learned in support of short-term (outage to outage) dose reduction. • The Association strives to identify, evaluate and endorse recommendations for long-term source reduction design change activities such as cobalt reduction recognizing this as one of the most effective dose management techniques. • The PWR RP/ALARA Association continually evaluates industry products and services with exposure impacts and shares experiences: e.g., shutdown chemistry, operating chemistry, chemical decon, zinc injections, micro filtration, and mechanical decon equipment to effectively manage our individual utility resources.

  5. RP/ALARA PWR ASSOCIATION BOARD MEMBERS • John Hunsicker – Chairman (VC Summer) • Bob Steritt – Chair Elect (Seabrook) • Rick Leasure – Secretary (Braidwood) • Clark Bourne – At Large (Vogtle) • Larry Pebble – At Large (San Onofre) • Kevin Hirsch – At Large (Crystal River) • Dean Divittore – At Large (Three Mile Island) • Teresa Cabe – At Large (Catawba)

  6. RP/ALARA PWR ASSOCIATION TYPICAL AGENDA • DAY 1 • Introduction • Board of Directors Report • Breakout of Plant Experiences • Report of Plant Experiences • Alpha Monitoring Program Overview

  7. RP/ALARA PWR ASSOCIATION TYPICAL AGENDA • DAY 2 • INPO Industry overview of ALARA efforts • NRC views on current Radiation Protection issues • AP 1000 presentation • Design and ALARA Considerations • High Interest Topics • Review of 5-year Dose Reduction Plans • Golden Nuggets (Gadgets and Tools) • Vendor Face Time • Wrap Up

  8. RP/ALARA PWR ASSOCIATION BREAKOUT SESSIONS andREPORT OF PLANT EXPERIENCES • Broken into small groups by NSS vendor with a facilitator assigned. • Each plant exchanges best practices and lessons learned. • In the afternoon each facilitator presents his/her groups data to all participants.

  9. RP/ALARA PWR ASSOCIATION EXAMPLES OF “GOOD” BREAKOUT SESSION DATA • Successes of major projects such as: • Head Replacements • Head Inspections • ECCS Sump Modifications • Core Barrel moves • Source Term Control/Shutdown Chemistry • System and hot spot flushes • Specialty resins • Exposure Ownership • Station Management Ownership • ALARA pre/post job review thresholds • Daily dose reporting • ALARA Initiatives • Permanent scaffold left erected in containment • Shielding applications

  10. RP/ALARA PWR ASSOCIATION HIGH INTEREST TOPICS • Benchmark Questions submitted by personnel which the other members reply with their plant ‘s process. • Examples of High Interest Topics include: • How do you determine ED setpoints? • What type of alpha monitoring do you perform? • Do you have a formalized hot spot reduction program? • Have you implemented a good strategy for reducing scaffold dose? • How do you develop cycle dose goals? • How many PCE’s have you had in the last year?

  11. RP/ALARA PWR ASSOCIATION GOLDEN NUGGETS • Inexpensive tools or gadgets which save dose and can be easily implemented at sites. • Examples of Golden Nuggets are: • Teletower • Steam Shark for boron removal • On-line ALARA Challenge Boards for jobs >50 mrem • Color coded plant locator valve maps • Locking devices for contaminated vacuum cleaner plugs • Use of cement tube in Sealand to center high level trash • Weekly “ALARA Focus” Job

  12. RP/ALARA PWR ASSOCIATION WEB SITE www.pwralara.org Containsinformation such as: • Meeting Information • Conduct Codes • Member Roster • Forms – Plant Status, Golden Nuggets, High Interest Topics • Global E-mail (Great tool!!!) • Useful Links (including ISOE and EPRI) • Golden Nuggets from previous meetings • Contact Us

  13. RP/ALARA PWR ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS • 1998 – PWR ALARA Chair (Patty Jones) was invited by the IAEA to share the Charter and meeting organization/ experience with Eastern Europe and Russia NPP’s in Finland. Based on the results of this meeting, the Eastern European and Russian ALARA Working Groups were established. • 2001 – Distributed copies of 5 year dose reduction plans to other PWR’s world wide. Japan and Russia translated the DC Cook plan into their native language and utilized it as a template for other countries to reduce occupational exposure. • 2007 – Asian ALARA Symposium; here to share our meeting format and encourage similar development in Asia.

  14. RP/ALARA PWR ASSOCIATION NEXT MEETING • January 23-24, 2008 in Ft Lauderdale, Fla. • Meetings are held 2 times a year, winter/ summer (non-outage times in US) • Summer 2008 meeting in Las Vegas,NV (July)

  15. RP/ALARA PWR ASSOCIATION LOOKING TO JOIN? • Article 2.01 of the By-Laws state “Membership is open to any entity that operates a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) facility and that elects to participate in the affairs of the Association.” • Current international members include Sizewell B and Ringhals. Others are considering. • Annual Dues of $750 US. This covers meeting fees. • Copies of By-Laws available.
