  4. Urban sprawl: the rapid and often poorly planned spread of cities and suburbs.

  6. Stages of Urban Growth • Urban Core: Downtown • Oldest part • “walking city”

  7. Urban Fringe: the ring of small towns and suburbs around a city. • Commuters • Leads to urban core decay.

  8. Rural Fringe: the small towns, farms and open spaces just beyond the suburbs. • Eaten up by urban sprawl

  9. Urban Growth Positives • Creates Needed Homes • Cheaper new houses • Economic boost • New Jobs, Purchases, and Taxes

  10. Urban Growth Negatives • Damages the Environment • Habitat loss for plants and animals • Air pollution and traffic jams
