Design process • We first conducted a survey to determine the need and the areas that would require a redesign. • Took the measurements of the classroom and started generating concepts. • Used those concepts to generate a couple of preliminary designs of the classroom. • Through discussions and evaluation selected the final design and showed it to the students. • After consulting the students created the final detailed design.

  3. Hierarchal chart for the classroom 1. Practical • Large black boards • Good projector view 2. Student friendly • Should have comfortable chairs • Tables should be big • Should have court hangers • Nice ventilation system 3. Should be able to accommodate a wide range of class sizes 4. Should withstand the test of time. • Furniture should be durable • Should have the latest technology

  4. Revised problem statement • Added more windows to increase the natural light. • Added coat hangers on two walls. • Staggered chairs for a better view. • Redesigned tables provide a larger work space. • Replaced blackboards with whiteboards. • Put in easy to clean hardwood flooring.

  5. Painting the Room Students did not like the dull white color that was currently painted in 62 Willard We asked the students which colors would be best fit, and the majority sided with shades of orange.

Desks Too many desks present in classroom Too cluttered Students complained of lack of writing space on desks Our solution was to replace all desks with long tables to add more writing space and add more isle space However, to accomplish this, the capacity of the room was cut by 30 students We found this to be an acceptable loss considering the high demand for more space.

  7. Uncomfortable Chairs Chairs were too small and offered no mobility to the student. The chair had hard wooden backs which made them very uncomfortable. Our solution was to add more comfortable and more mobile swivel chairs to provide more convenience to the student

  8. Lack of Natural Light Students/teachers complained of limited light in the classroom. Our solution was to add more and bigger windows to the class to add more natural light to brighten the classroom

  10. Messy Blackboards Some professors complained that the blackboards present in the classroom were too messy and hard to write on. Our solution was to add a whiteboard instead to eliminate the mess.

  11. Old Tile Floors The floor in 62 Willard was made of old, dirty tiles that are very unappealing. Patches of tiles in the classroom were mixed and matched Our solution was to remove the tiling entirely and replace it with more expensive, but more appealing hardwood flooring This was very expensive, but the demand for a newer floor was high by all the students

Bill of Materials • Swivel Chairs – (70 chairs * $40) = $2800 • Tables – (7 tables * $250) = $1750 • White Board - $400 • Paint – (7 gallons * $30) = $210 • Windows - (3 windows * $175) =$525 • New Flooring (1200 sq ft. * $8) = $9600 • Coat Racks (5 coat racks * $75) = $375 • New Doors (3 doors * $175) = $525 • Total Cost = $13400

  20. Engineering Analysis • Total Cost = $13400 • Reasonable? • Total cost seems slightly high. • Could do without hardwood flooring

  21. Concluding Remarks Met all customer needs Price seems to be too high If reevaluated and cheaper and more cost efficient products were found, this project would be more practical to begin.
