    1. Discovering Academic Success: Methods & Motivation for Your Chapter Joan B. Landry, PhD, CHES Delta Beta AOII 91’ Adjunct Faculty Kinesiology Department University of Louisiana at Lafayette

    2. Welcome & Congratulations! By your presence…. You are a leader! What do we know about leaders???? Your not the only Leader I’m here to talk to today – don’t forget to share with your Scholarship Chair! Discussion: What characteristics do we expect from leaders? Are they born with those qualities? Were both Hitler and Gandhi great leaders? Discussion: What characteristics do we expect from leaders? Are they born with those qualities? Were both Hitler and Gandhi great leaders?

    3. One sources says…. Key Characteristics of a Leader: Honesty Competent - Your actions should be based on reason and moral principles. Do not make decisions based on childlike emotional desires or feelings. Forward-looking- have a vision of the future. The vision must be owned throughout the organization. Fair-minded - Show fair treatment to all people. Prejudice is the enemy of justice. Inspiring, Courageous and Innovative! http://www.coach4growth.com/good-leadership-skills/characteristicsofaleader.html

    4. Another Source Says… Knowledge of Mission: Leaders must know the mission of their organization. Know why the organization exists.   Vision & Competency Practically speaking, not all executives immediately possess all of the characteristics that spell success….. Communication and Interpersonal skills : It does little good to have a strong mission, vision, and goals-if the leaders cannot easily and effectively convey ideas to the stakeholders inside and outside of the organization. Successful leaders easily create rapport. A "can do” attitude, Inspiration & Ambition: Nothing builds a picture of success more than achievement, and achievement is the number one factor that motivates just about everyone across all cultures. “When the leadership is seen as those who work to attain increasingly higher goals, “members” will be impressed and more willing to mirror that behavior. David G. Javitch, Ph.D., is Entrepreneur.com's "Employee Management"

    5. SO WHAT! How does your leadership skills relate to Academic Success??? What are you thinking??????

    6. Let’s put them together One size does not fit all Just as two leaders may not achieve their goals the same way, neither does one study method work for every learner. Your organizational academic program should reflect this fact. Leadership skills are learned and improve with practice As do study skills, time management & simply “growing up” Your organization’s academic program should be involved from the beginning of a members journey with you, not just after they fail….

    7. Which leads us to… Innovation & Inspiration is part of the game! Only using negative feedback can lead to unmotivated teams, all teams from business to sports to your chapter and they will need some positive “you can do it” within their academic programs and no just “do it or else” Communication – how are you and when are you talking to your chapter about academics? “Morale & Encouragement” Grades are the end measure, focus on the “path” that leads to the end…(page 5, Kappa Alpha)

    8. How are we doing…. Are you connecting the dots? What do you have issues with so far? Can we talk? Lets think out of the box….

    9. “Well you picked ‘em” How did they become your members? We know what their responsibility is to the organization, what is the organizations responsibility to the member regarding academic success and simply support….

    10. Learning Styles & Study Methods: How many different ways do people learn? How do you learn new things? How do you study?

    11. Motivating your Chapter What is motivation? Energy behind a desired behavior How does it work? Internal vs External Not so much all or none but rather one is a process to the other One is more sustainable Self-regulated (autonomous) Self-efficacy? How does knowing that translate to your academic programs? YES, ultimately it is a choice – the members choice…and…. Did you make the best choices as a Freshman???? We Generally Make BETTER choices with Better information and support systems.YES, ultimately it is a choice – the members choice…and…. Did you make the best choices as a Freshman???? We Generally Make BETTER choices with Better information and support systems.

    12. Academic Feedback Example of all negative… Example of all positive… Which one is most represented in your program? Are you sure? Have you asked? Who has succeeded on your “academic probation” program? What is their story? Did anyone ask? What is in between? How would it look? Notice how context specific it can be…

    13. Feedback Time Line When does your monitoring start? Who gets monitored? Why? What happens to those who do have the minimum GPA? Do they still have academic goals too? Why or why not? Doesn’t even a 3.00 member have room to improve???Doesn’t even a 3.00 member have room to improve???

    14. Lets summarize ... We need to remember even with a common goal (required GPA) there are several ways to reach it! Academic policies should reflect the diversity of the learner Methods of support should not be one size Programs should include not only consequences for failure but opportunities to succeed and support to succeed that begins before failure. Monitoring can be non-discriminate why not make it everyone’s business to improve their academic standing and not just those failing or new members etc.… Thoughts/Comments? What is your perception of the “hardest sale” to your chapter? How can we help you?

    15. Practical Study Suggestions (in case we’ve missed any) Sit where you are least distracted Get the contact info of another student Read the provided material more than once, early if possible Figure our your learning style (we can help with this!)… Its ok if you don’t study well with others Get a tutor sooner than later Find out who else in the chapter took or is taking this class Know when to drop a class, not sure? Ask! (know who to ask….)

    16. More Examples Flash cards Written notes Highlighted pages Reading out loud Re-writing notes from class Study groups (Facebook page for class) Study location? (with or without background noise etc.) Study groups Participation in class Where the student actually sits in class Tape recordings of class lectures Sharing notes Reading and re-reading the text and or your notes

    17. What would the perfect Academic Program look like? Generally… How specific should it be? What information does your organization need to have available before your new members join? Lets end with this question…How will we know its working?????? If its not working, who is to blame? What are the possibilities?Lets end with this question…How will we know its working?????? If its not working, who is to blame? What are the possibilities?
