Annotating Test Questions • Your going to receive a Language Arts Terms Cheat sheet. • This should go directly into your daybook. • Then you will receive a second set of questions to review. • Look back at your notes from last week and begin by simply annotating the questions. • Remember we are looking for the Language Arts term that the question is asking us…

  3. Example… definition • What does the word durable in the third paragraph mean? • Flashy • Stylish • Inexpensive • Long-lasting Context Clues

Story Elements Mini-lesson 5D 5.01 Increase fluency, comprehension, and insight through a meaningful and comprehensive literacy program by: reading self-selected literature and other materials of individual interest. analyzing the effects of such elements as plot, theme, point of view, characterization, mood, and style. 5.02 Study the characteristics of literary genres (fiction, nonfiction)

  5. Plot ~ The Exposition REMEMBER…We are STILL in the Exposition… Which includes: the setting (time and place) characters conflict

  6. The Exposition ~ Conflict • Today we will be looking at Conflict… • Conflict is the struggle between two or more the opposing forces

  7. Types of Conflict • There are 2 types of characters: • Internal • External

  8. Internal Conflict • This type of conflict goes on within the characters mind. Do BAD! Do GOOD! When your conscious is playing with you…

  9. External Conflict 4 Kinds • Man versus Man • Man versus Nature • Man versus Society • Man versus Physical Obstacle

  10. Man versus Man • Two characters in an actual physical or verbal confrontation.

  11. Man versus Nature • character fighting against the forces of nature. • i.e., being left outside in a winter storm. You can freeze to death, so your fight is to survive.

  12. Man versus Society • When there is something going on in the world that the character tries to go against that is embedded in the structural workings of our society. • i.e., if the character is dealing with stealing. In our society it's wrong to steal so, you must not steal, but some man or people stealing is what they do everyday but that is not what society believes is right.

  13. Man-vs-Physical Obstacle • When the character has something physically wrong with them that poses a challenge to their everyday survival. • i.e., your in a race, fall down, and sprain your ankle. You get up, you can still run, but you have to limp the rest of the way. Your opposing force is the sprained ankle.
