  1. Emcore vs. Agilent RX modules Dirk Wiedner, Physikalisches Institut der Universität Heidelberg

  2. Optical receivers choice

  3. What is the choice based on? Transmission reliability: Optical data transmission must not degrade operation Bit Error Rate of <10-15 baseline Single bit errors must not lead to global resets Confirmation of promised performance in LHCb test Compatibility: Rx-Module must fit on O-RxCard Availability: Rx-Modules lead time, product lifetime Price: Competitive price ie. 400US (500 pc. needed)

  4. Optical Properties • Input sensitivity of new Emcore MRX9515 5dB less • Agilent HFBR-782B or Emcore MRX9512 ok. • Fiber Length: • 13m Breakout + 25m + 120m + 1m typical

  5. LHCb Tests (1/2) • Muon Trigger: • numerous tests with Agilent HFBR 782B • RICH: • detailed tests with Emcore MRX9512 • ST / OT: • tests with both GOL VCSEL Emcore MRX9512

  6. LHCb Tests (2/2) Final qualification procedure (suggestion) BERT with LHCb GOL-VCSEL or 12-way Transmitter @1.6 Gbps 15m breakout+30m patch cord+120m+1m patch cord extra 6dB attenuation maximum BER 10-12 Repeat test for 10 receiver samples Possibly ORCTest card + opt. attenuator useful

  7. Compatibility most 12-way optical receivers close to SNAP12 O-RxCard IF14-1 can be configured for most receivers with jumpers Electrical characteristics effectively equal VCSEL diode or transmitter: output -2dBm max. (fiber loss ~0.3 dB /interconnection) obtain maximum optical power range 125/50 μm MM 12-way ribbon fibers MTP/MPO

  8. Availability Agilent HFBR782B was available lately Emcore MRX9512 bought last year Emcore MRX9515 unacceptable as replacement product policy unclear Other competitors: Picolight Zarlink

  9. Price up to 500 receivers necessary all spares must be ordered now 310 Euro ea. for 180 Agilent HFBR 782 (Muon trigger) 400$ US ea. for 38 Emcore MRX9512 (O-RxCard PP) exchange rate 400$ US = 328 Euro = 502 CHF

  10. Summary Two major candidates Emcore MRX9512 Agilent HFBR782 Decision must be based on appropriate specification (enough dynamic range) Tests in LHCb scenario solid product policy and availability price must be competitive
