  2. What is it? • Unified Sports is a program run under the direction of Special Olympics which brings together students with and without disabilities and provides them with an environment of meaningful athletic competition • Motto: On the field we’re teammates off the field we’re friends

  3. Some Facts • Half a million people worldwide take part in Unified Sports • The state of Maryland is considered to have the model program for Unified Sports • The concept of Unified Sports began back in the mid 1980s, but has really taken off in just the last few years

  4. Unified Sports and FCPS • Started in the spring of 2010 in Frederick County • Tennis, Indoor Bocce and Track & Field • All 10 county high schools participate during all 3 season with over 200 students participating each season • FCPS is a leader in the state

  5. Benefits • Sports skill development • Meaningful competitive experiences • Public education • Personal development • An alternative program choice or opportunity
