  1. Welcome to Year 1Robins Information evening for parents and carers. 12thSePTEMBER 2019

  2. Moving from Reception Class • In Year 1 the children are moving from the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum into the National Curriculum. • We manage this transition very carefully and pace it for each child’s individual needs.

  3. EYFS to National Curriculum • Main change is that the EYFS is split into areas of learning and the National Curriculum is taught as subjects. • Teaching methods remain the same – learning through play, active learning and linking subjects through topics. • Children are expected to concentrate and focus for longer as they mature and become ready.

  4. Timetable and Weekly Information • Celebration assembly is on Fridays • PE is on Monday and Thursday afternoon. • Our Topic this term is ‘Turrets and Tiaras’ which covers mainly history and science. • Snack – Children are given a snack daily around 10.45 (please ensure you keep the school informed of any known allergies). Children may bring their own healthy snack too. • Kit – Please ensure children have a PE kit at school, all kit and school uniform must be named. • Show and Tell is on a Friday afternoon. • Library/Guided Reading is on Tuesday

Maths • Counting to and across to 100, forward and backwards • Count, read and write numbers to 100 in numerals and write numerals in words to at least 20 • Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and the relationship between • 2, 5 and 10 times tables, counting in multiples of 2’s, 5’s and 10’s • Fractions (half and quarter) in shapes and turns and recognise half of quantities • Place value • Number bonds • 1more/less and 10 more/less • Problem solving – adding, subtracting, doubling, halving, measures, money • 2D and 3D shapes • Data/sorting information – graphs, pictograms, tables • Capacity and Volume (full/half full) • Measurement – comparing lengths, heights, weight • Time –recognise and use language relating to dates, including days of the week, months and tell the time to the hour and half hour

  6. Literacy We follow the Year 1 units outlined in the Primary Framework for Literacy. Fiction: • Stories with familiar settings • Repeating patterns • Traditional tales • Fantasy stories Non-Fiction Units: • Instructions • Labels, lists and signs • Letters • Information texts Poetry Units: • Songs and repetitive poems • Pattern and rhyme • The Senses • Traditional Poems

  7. Phonics and Spelling • Within Key Stage 1 we teach Phonics using Sounds-Write. This starts from the sounds that we use in speech. From there, it takes them in carefully sequenced, incremental steps and teaches them how each of the 44 or so sounds in the English language can be spelt. • Each Monday we will send home spellings to be learned using the look, say, cover, write, check method • Every Monday the children will be tested on their spelling words

Year 1 Phonics • Phonics is taught everyday, each week we will be introducing new sound or spelling pattern. • We follow ‘Sounds Write’ Scheme • Your child will be placed in a group most suited to their level of ability • that there is more than one way of spelling most sounds: the sound 'ae', spelt as <a-e> in 'name', can be represented as <a> in 'table', <ai> in 'rain', <eigh> in 'eight', <ay> in 'play', and so on • • that many spellings can represent more than one sound: <ea> can be the sound 'e' in 'head', 'a-e' in 'break', or 'ee' in 'seat’ • We will be holding a separate Phonics meeting for parents later in the term – please see Newsletter for the update

Reading in y1 • We will be changing reading books everyday as long as they have been read, either at school or at home • Please, can you indicate the number of page your child finished reading in their reading record • It is very helpful if the reading book is in the book bag everyday even if they haven’t read at home the previous night; we will be able to read the book at school • Try to read everyday for 10-15 min if possible • Your child will also be reading in a group during our Guided Reading sessions once a week • In Y1 the children are becoming much more confident readers and so now its time to think about expression, intonation, fluency and comprehension. It is important that the children do not race ahead with decoding if these skills are not embedded.

How can you help? • Read with your child every night – allowing them to work out the words and discuss the story. • Look for numbers out and about – reinforce using numbers all the time – telling the time, money, how many etc. • Encourage writing and talking about ideas. • Help with homework – encourage them but let them do it themselves.

Useful Information • The new website will be updated weekly with what we are learning about, spellings, homework, games and links. • Named water bottles should be at school every day please • No toys in school please! • WOW Moments • All uniform, kit, bags must be clearly labelled with your child’s full name please • Show & Tell – on Fridays; Please can we only have objects related to our current Topic

House Teams and Rewards • Stickers, stamps, house points are used for individual achievement • Class points – children work together as a team to achieve a treat when 100 points are collected • Each child in House team: Farah, Ennis, Simmonds, Redgrave • Collect stars for individual certificate and team points/treat • Star of the day • Golden time on Friday afternoon • Celebration Assembly is on Friday when school values and star of the week are celebrated – children who have made an extra special effort to demonstrate each of the school values and academic achievement

Mike’s Diary • Each Friday a child will be chosen to take home our class pet for the weekend • Please encourage your child to record their adventures with Mike in the Diary and return the following Monday • Your child can use writing, drawings, photographs or all three! • Above all have a lot of fun! • Please sing the letter to allow Mike come home with your child. (GDPR)
