  2. Rotary International, founded in Chicago, Illinois, USA in 1905, is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders with more than 1.2 million members united in service. It provides humanitarian services and encourages high ethnical standards in business and profession. Rotary is also involved in building peace and goodwill in the world. Rotary is non-political and non-religious. Rotary club of Ikoyi Metro was founded by Rotary club of Ikoyi and Chartered December 11, 2001 with 15 members. The Club membership has grown to 32 members as at April 2011. Rotary club of Ikoyi Metro has embarked on various projects within the 10year period it was chartered Areas where projects have been executed include; Healthcare-Donation of various medical equipments to various hospitals. Donation to Orphanages Education-Award of scholarships to Indigent students Education-Provision of Library equipped with books Education-Provision of a Computer Education centre Water-Provision of water boreholes to deserving communities etc We have also been involved in the eradication of Polio worldwide through active participation in the areas of vaccination and Public enlightment.   3. PROJECT TITLE ESTABLISHMENT OF A CERVICAL CANCER BRACHYTHERAPY CENTRE IN LAGOS UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL, LAGOS, NIGERIA. Rotary Club Of Ikoyi Metro Project 2011/2012

PREAMBLE • Cervical cancer is the second most dreaded cancer after breast cancer in women worldwide. • In less developed countries, an estimated 300,000 deaths are recorded annually and 80% of these cases occur in low-income or middle-income earners. • Cervical cancer is caused by HPV or human papillomavirus which is diagnosed by Pap smear Rotary Club Of Ikoyi Metro Project 2011/2012 2

  5. PREAMBLE • Cervical cancer is caused by HPV or human papillomavirus which is diagnosed by Pap smear • Cervical cancer commonly occurs between the ages of 30 and 45 • Cervical cancer can be prevented by vaccination Rotary Club Of Ikoyi Metro Project 2011/2012

PROJECT OBJECTIVES Our intention is to create a Cervical cancer Brachytherapy centre that will; • Improve the survival rate of Cervical cancer sufferers in Nigeria which at present is better imagine that said. • Affordable to generality of cervical cancer sufferers Rotary Club Of Ikoyi Metro Project 2011/2012 3

CERVICAL CANCER TREATMENT/MANAGEMENT • Treatment or optimal management of cervical cancer involves a multidisciplinary team and approach and this include the use of Brachytherapy (form of Radiotherapy) combined with other methods like surgery and chemotherapy. MORTALITY RATES • In the United States of America, 12,200 new cases of cervical cancer were diagnosed in 2010 and 4,210 deaths were recorded representing about 33% mortality rate. • In the United Kingdom, approximately, 2,800 women diagnosed yearly and as many as 1,100 deaths were recorded representing a 39% mortality rate. • In Nigeria, 350,000 new cases of cancer were diagnosed though the exact number of various cancer cases and mortality cases could not be ascertained, Breast and cervical cancer were said to have contributed the highest numbers.   10. THE NEED FOR A BRACHYTHERAPY CENTER • The radiation dose delivered by Brachytherapy is CRITICAL in curing patients of cervical cancer and has been the standard of treatment for over 100 years. Rotary Club Of Ikoyi Metro Project 2011/2012 5

WHY THE URGENCY? • Until recent, cancer awareness among Nigerians has been very low • With renewed interest by corporate bodies in areas of public enlightment and awareness campaigns, more people are beginning to get tested and we expect the numbers to go higher • In Nigeria, a country with over 150million people, there exist only one(1) Brachytherapy centre located in the University College Hospital, Ibadan, western Nigeria and Donated by IAEA. WHY THE URGENCY? • This centre is currently flooded with patients hence the need to create a new centre accessible to cervical cancer sufferers all over the country. • Lagos state is the former capital but still remains the commercial capital and the nerve centre of Nigeria and home to over 18million people. • Lagos state is home to Lagos University Teaching Hospital, a foremost Government owned tertiary institution. WHY THE URGENCY? • Lagos University Teaching Hospital diagnose lots of cervical cancer patients weekly, they are all turned back due to a lack of facilities or referred to the University College Hospital, Ibadan which is about 150km from Lagos • For those that can afford the treatment at the University teaching Hospital Ibadan, cost is further increased because sufferers will have to cater for personal needs like hotel bills and sundries.
