  2. Launch Bloomberg and Press GO

  3. Enter your login details

  4. Choose Settings Wheel, then set window size to Normal

  5. From Windows Menu Click Install Excel Add-In

  6. Press Install

  7. Click OK

  8. Click Microsoft Excel 2010

  9. File -> Open -> 08b-datastart.xlsx

  10. When we know the Ticker symbol of an asset we can use Bloomberg formulas to download data directly to Excel

  11. Current Data: BDPBloomberg Data Point

  12. Click on Bloomberg

  13. Click on cell N1 and select Find Fields

  14. Search for e.g. dividend

  15. For variables without a calendar we use a BDP formula

  16. Select Dividend Ex Date and click Add

  17. Click Apply and then Close

  18. Type =BDP(Ticker,Datafield)

  19. Copy cell and paste for all companies

  20. Now have data for that variable

  21. Historical Data: BDHBloomberg Data HistoricalSpecify particular dates

  22. Click on cell O1 and select Find Fields

  23. Search for e.g. dividend

  24. For variables with a calendar we use a BDH formula, which also needs a start and end date for the data

  25. Select Dividends per Share and press Add

  26. Click Apply then Close

  27. Type =BDH(Ticker,Datafield,StartDate,EndDate)

  28. Copy cell and paste for all companies

  29. Now have data for all companies

  30. Historical Data: BDHBloomberg Data HistoricalAccounting Data

  31. Balance sheet data is usually only available on a quarterly or annual basis so we need to be careful about dates

  32. Type the variable name in P1e.g. TOT_DEBT_TO_TOT_ASSET

  33. Use the same BDH formula as before but specify Financial Years as“FY2011”,and request data per Financial Year “per=fy”

  34. Copy and paste to get for all companies

  35. Bulk Data: BDSBloomberg Data Sets

  36. Some data is stored in a bulk data set

  37. Click on cell Q1 and select Find Fields

  38. Search Top Holder

  39. Select Top 20 Holders and Addto get largest shareholders in a company

  40. Click Apply and Close

  41. Extract first row using=BDS(Ticker,Datafield,“StartRow=1”,“EndRow=1”)

  42. Shows largest shareholder in this company, with the percentage of shares which he owns

  43. Challenge • Calculate the current Dividend Yield for each company • Calculate the Total Assets for Financial Year 2011 for each company

  44. Multiple rows of data for one company • All of the examples so far have been used to get one piece of data at a time for a particular company • The formulas can also be used to get data for multiple time periods at once

  45. Insert new sheet

  46. If we want to find data for Google we type itsticker symbol which is GOOG US Equity

  47. Click on a blank cell and select Find fields

  48. Search Price Earnings and select PE_RATIO

  49. Select PE_RATIO and click Add

  50. Click Apply and Close
