  3. Theories of Learning • The Human Memory Model • Memory stores • Cognitive processes • Metacognition • Behaviourism The theory that explains learning in terms of observable behaviours and how they’re influenced by stimuli from the environment • Social Cognitive Theory The theory of learning that focuses on changes in behaviour that result from observing others • Constructivism The theory of learning suggesting that learners create their own knowledge of the topics they study rather than receiving that knowledge as transmitted to them by some other source.

  8. Benefits of Constructivism Children enjoy learning more when actively involved. Learning works best when concentrating on understanding and thinking It gives ownership to the students of what they learn Engages and stimulates students Promotes communication and social skills

  9. Challenges in Constructivism There is not alot of hard evidence to say that constructivist methods work Critics suggest that constructivist methods are more successful for those students from a privileged background(Concept to classroom, 2004).

  10. Characteristics of Constructivism Learners construct knowledge that makes sense to them New learning depends on current understand Social interaction facilitates learning The most meaningful learning occurs within real world tasks
