  3. Do Now: Monday, October 21st, 2013 1. futile – 193: (adj.) Useless. A situation or effort that is unlikely to produce any result. 2. parched – 205: (adj.) Something that is very dry, especially because of hot weather. 3. presumptuous– 207: (adj.) Doing something that is overly bold and that seems rude. Root: “tom” to cut 4. epitome:(n.) The best or most typical example; someone that embodies a trait or characteristic. 5. dichotomy: (n.) Two opposite parts of the whole. 6. anatomy: (n.) The parts of the body.

Semicolons • A semicolon is most commonly used to link two independent clauses that are closely related in thought. • When a semicolon is used to join two or more ideas in a sentence, those ideas are then given equal rank (they are of equal importance in the sentence). • Example) Some students like to type their first draft at home; others prefer to handwrite a draft in class.

  16. Semicolon Non-Examples • Amir and Baba immigrate to the United States; Amir won the kite tournament in Kabul when he was a boy. • Before they moved to the United States; Baba and Amir left Kabul and secretly crossed the border into Pakistan.

The Kite Runner Chapter 11, pg. 128 Semicolons Exercise • In the following excerpt from The Kite Runner, revise the passage to include at least two semicolons. • Remember: semicolons connect two closely related independent clauses. Semicolons provide a little more of a pause. But I didn’t tell them. I thanked Mr. Nguyen for not calling the cops. I took Baba home. He sulked and smoked on the balcony while I made rice with chicken neck stew. It had been a year and a half since we’d stepped off the Boeing from Peshawar, and Baba was still adjusting. (Hosseini, pg. 128)

  18. Why use semicolons? • There are many ways you can combine and separate ideas in sentences. • There is not just one correct way. (Some ways are incorrect, but there is more than one correct way!)

The Kite Runner Chapter 12 • SWBAT use supporting details to describe the developing relationship between Amir and Soraya. • SWBAT identify a change in the relationship between Amir and Baba.

  20. DO NOW, Wednesday, October 23rd • In the English Skills section of your World Literature Journal: • Respond to the following questions. In your response, use two semicolons to join sentences. Highlight or underline your two sentences that use a semicolon. • What are the limitations of loyalty? How does Amir demonstrate loyalty to Baba during his battle with cancer? Use supporting details from Chapter 12.
