THE PAST CONTINUOUS We often use the Past Continuous at the beginning of a story to set thescene and to say what was happening. Ex. : On April 1stI was staying with some friends in the country. It was a sunny day and we were sunbathing in the garden.

THE PAST CONTINUOUS • -Very frequently these “actions inprogress” (Past Continuous) are “interrupted” by a short, completed action (Past Simple). we use the simple past tense to express a short action that happens in the middle of the long action. We can join the two ideas with when or while.
THE PAST CONTINUOUS • We have two actions:1.long action (watching TV), expressed with past continuous tense2.short action (telephoned), expressed with simple past tense • when + short action (simple past tense)while + long action (past continuous tense) • When you telephoned, I was watching TV. • While I was watching TV, you telephoned me.
THE PAST CONTINUOUS • → Similarity in form with the Present Continuous: it is identical except for using was/wereinstead of am/is/are
