  1. The Causes of World War I The Imperialistic Powers of France, Great Britain, Austria-Hungary, Italy and Russia became rivals.

  2. Imperialism – control or influence a powerful nation has over a weaker country • Nationalism – loyalty to one’s country or nation • Militarism – a nation’s warlike policy or practice • Alliance – an agreement to help out one another/work together

  3. Imperialism Leads to War • France, Great Britain, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, and Russia were all powerful imperialistic countries • They did not have equal shares of land/riches, so they became rivals which eventually led to war

  4. 1. Imperial Nations Become Militarized • Imperial nations mistrust one another • Build bigger armies and navies to outdo each other • Industrial nations also build bigger, deadlier weapons

  5. Alliance System • European nations form alliances to help each other if attacked • 1914 2 rival alliances in place

  6. Rival Alliances • Triple Alliance – Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy • Triple Entente – Great Britain, France, and Russia

  7. Event Sparks WWI • Serbs living in Austria-Hungary want to be part of Serbia (neighboring country) • Many Serbs lived in Sarajevo (city in Austria-Hungary)

  8. Austrian emperor send nephew to Sarajevo to improve relations with Serbs • June 28, 1914, Franz Ferdinand and wife Sophie were killed as they rode through the streets of Sarajevo

  9. Austria-Hungary blamed Serbs, declare war on July 28,1914 • Russia said they would protect Serbs • Germany declares war on Russia

  10. France enters to support Serbs • Great Britain enters to support France • Now several countries involved in war
